How to make clothes for a French bulldog with your own hands?
18.02.2018 11 066
On the question of whether clothing is needed for a French bulldog, the opinions of veterinary specialists and breeders vary greatly. Some talk about its harm, because when animals are wrapped, the thermoregulatory processes inherent in nature are disrupted. Others, on the contrary, believe that clothing for dogs is a necessary attribute that cannot be avoided.
Both opinions have the right to exist, but each owner makes his own choice. It should be noted that dogs of this breed are short-haired, so in severe frosts and windy weather it is recommended to wear suitable clothing. In order not to spend money on buying clothes for your pet, you can sew or knit some items of clothing yourself.
Necessary materials
To sew clothes with your own hands you will need:
- textile;
- padding polyester;
- scissors, threads, needles;
- elastic bands, zippers, rivets, buttons and more;
- details for decoration (necessary for a bulldog girl).
If you want to knit some elements of a dog’s wardrobe, then you should get:
- knitting threads;
- knitting needles;
- crochet;
- a piece of soft natural fabric that will act as a lining.
Taking measurements
To create a pattern, you must first take all the measurements. The French bulldog is mainly sewn in overalls with a hood or raincoats, but for any other product you need to know the following measurements:
- The length of the product or the length of the back - the measurement is taken from the withers (from the collar) to the base of the tail.
- Neck circumference is determined by the length of the collar. Since this breed has a very sensitive neck, it is important to sew a jumpsuit that will not rub or irritate the skin, that is, make the neck free.
- Chest circumference - measured from the withers down, passing under the front legs through the entire chest and rising again to the withers.
- Waist circumference is determined by the narrowest part of the pet’s body, that is, directly in front of the hind legs.
- The height of the paws is necessary for sewing overalls.
If you have no experience in sewing clothes, then it is better to go to a tailor shop, where they will take all your pet’s measurements and sew clothes to order, or visit a dog clothing store.
Sewing instructions
You can start sewing clothes after taking measurements, creating a full-size pattern and preparing the necessary materials and tools.
Overalls
For your pet, it is better to choose fabric with a water-repellent effect, this will make the overalls universal. In order not to sew several overalls at once, you can make one model from high-quality fabric and sew a lining underneath it for severe frosts.
Important! If you have no experience in sewing clothes, it is better to make a trial version, for example, from an old sheet. Try it on your pet, adjust all the measurements if necessary, and only then proceed to sewing on the main fabric.

The jumpsuit consists of two identical parts. After the pattern, you need to baste the parts manually and carry out preliminary fitting. If everything suits your pet, then you can sew all the seams on a sewing machine or by hand, sew in a fastener and adjust all the details (video from the Household Affairs channel).
Knitted sweater
Knitting pattern for a simple sweater using acrylic yarn:
- 38 loops are cast on the knitting needles and the first 22 cm are knitted with an elastic band: 2 knit stitches - 2 purl stitches.
- Next, 10 loops are knitted in the front row, the next 10 loops are closed and the row ends.
- The next purl row is knitted in this way - the first 18 stitches, then cast on another 10 stitches and finish the row. We have our first opening.
- After this, another 9 cm are knitted with an elastic band, 2 knit stitches - 2 purl loops, and a second armhole is made according to the same principle as described above.
- Then another 22 cm are knitted with an elastic band.

Clothes pattern for Yorkies.
Sewing clothes for Yorkshire Terrier dogs has several features that must be taken into account when creating patterns. Then your dog will be comfortable in the sewn clothes. Clothes for Yorkies should have a slight allowance for freedom of movement. This is due to the fact that this breed has hair that can form a ball under clothing. This fur will cause pain to the dog. You also need to remember about the freedom of the tail, you also need to make a free space or fastener so that the dog can go to the toilet.
What you should pay attention to
You can not only buy dog clothes in the store, but also sew them yourself. Before you create your own clothes for French bulldogs, check out these tips for choosing a dog's wardrobe:
- Clothes should be comfortable. An active pet will want to explore the park, scour the bushes, or chase a thrown ball. The jacket shouldn't interfere with this. Watch your seam allowances when sewing. It is their absence that makes clothes tight and unwearable.
- For ease of washing, choose practical materials. And also make sure that the fabric does not lose color after frequent rinsing.
- French bulldogs are prone to allergies, so only natural fabrics should be used.
- Young animals are very active, so the suit will have to be washed after every active walk. Therefore, it is better not to limit yourself to one copy, but to sew several sets of clothes at once.
- For winter walking, choose waterproof fabrics that will protect your pet's fur from moisture.
- For a summer promenade, light outfits are suitable that will protect your pet from the sun. Make a choice in favor of T-shirts and, of course, Panama hats.
Patterns for winter overalls for dogs.
When making winter overalls for dachshunds, you need to remember about a large allowance for the insulating lining of the overalls and, of course, pay special attention to the sleeves, which, due to their short length and large amount of insulation, can be uncomfortable for the dog.
When making overalls for dogs of other breeds, you need to remember to add an allowance for insulating material, carefully design all the armholes, sleeves and fasteners. All this should not cause discomfort to your pet during a walk.

But even those who do not follow fashion should take care of the quality of clothing and its aesthetic side. A well-tailored suit will not only warm the dog, but will also give an unforgettable experience to both the owner and passers-by.
So, what will a bulldog need:
- Overalls . The most practical wardrobe item. Warms, keeps the coat clean and gives a pleasant mood. Most often, owners choose this particular clothing;

Features of clothing for different breeds of dogs.
Clothing for Dachshund dogs has an increased length and small paws; this is especially important to consider when sewing insulated items. To do this, you need to slightly enlarge the armhole and make the sleeves loose so that they do not put pressure on the paws while moving. Patterns for French Bulldog
Clothing for French bulldogs should have a small allowance for freedom of movement. Also, in some clothing models, you need to make an allowance on the pet’s neck so that the collar does not rub.
How to take measurements
Sewing an outfit for a French bulldog, just like for people, begins with creating a clothing pattern. To do this, you need to take measurements as accurately as possible. Otherwise, the finished item may restrict movement, interfere, press, rub, or not fit at all. All measurements must be taken with the dog standing. For convenience, you can loosely tie a ribbon or elastic band in place of the collar and take the rest of the measurements from it.
To correctly create a clothing pattern for a French bulldog, you need to know:
- The circumference of the neck where the dog usually wears a collar.
- Chest circumference - at the widest point of the chest. Measured under the front paws.
- Waist size – for a girl, this is the thinnest part of her body. The measurement is taken directly in front of the hind legs. For a boy, the measurement is made higher up the abdomen, taking into account physiological characteristics.
- Back length - the distance between the first measurement (neck circumference) and the base of the tail.
- The distance from the neck (conditional collar) to the beginning of the front paws.
- Distance between the front paws (measurement taken parallel to the floor).
- The circumference of the front and rear paws at their widest and narrowest points.
- Paw length (optional, if desired).
The Frenchie has stunning, funny protruding ears, which in the cold season also need to be hidden under a hat or hood of overalls/jackets. For the hood, additionally measure the distance from the neck (mark) to the frontal bone of the skull, just below the line of the ears.
Sweater for pet
This master class will help you learn how to knit a beautiful and warm sweater. The most important thing in knitting is to be warm, comfortable and beautiful. You can also use threads from old sweaters and other items. Most often, such items are knitted for small dogs or those whose hair is short.
You can use any thread, but it is important that they are not synthetic, as they can cause discomfort, just like prickly ones.
Before you start knitting this sweater, you must first take the necessary measurements from the dog - the length of the back, belly, chest volume.

What we need to prepare for knitting:
- the necessary threads of the selected color;
- knitting needles;
- hook;
- measuring tape;
- pattern that we made taking into account the sizes.
Those who are just starting to knit need to knit a test sweater to understand where the mistakes are and how to knit, taking into account the pattern, and we will also be able to determine the knitting density and how the pattern will look on the product. For a dog of the required size, we measure the chest circumference and from these measurements we calculate how many buttonholes we need for the set, in our case approximately 88 buttonholes. We start knitting it from the collar; to calculate it, for a small dog we subtract 20 from 88, and for a medium-sized dog, ten more. Now we collect the required number of buttonholes and knit them with an elastic band one after another, knitting them to a height of four centimeters. And if the dog is larger, then five centimeters of elastic.
The resulting number of buttonholes must be divided into five parts, where we knit the first two parts with an elastic band, the third with satin stitch, and the quarter and fifth with an elastic band. We knit everything like this, only we add loops in every second row to expand the product for the dog’s chest. Approximately after seven centimeters we make holes for the paws. But it's best to try it on. Then we knit again in the same way as before. And so on until the end of the sweater, but we make a reduction so that the sweater does not stretch when worn. At the end we close all the buttonholes. We crochet all the ends and connect the parts. The sweater is ready.
Such sweaters can also be crocheted, then you get a more openwork version, more suitable for a girl than a boy. But in any case, this will keep the dog’s body warm while walking outside.
