Origin
The breed appeared thanks to the tenacity of the Jack Russell. The pastor was sectioning a hound dog for hunting. He conducted experiments by mating fox terriers with small bull terriers.
After the priest's death, work continued. A year later, puppies appeared with a height of 25-30 cm.
Do you like Jack Russell?
Not really
The breed was called "Jack Russell". The dogs were distinguished by their endurance and unattractive appearance, so they were not distributed among aristocrats.
Everything changed in 1860, when exhibitions appeared.
Two decades later, Jack Russell Terriers were finally recognized. At competitions they made up 1/5 of the participants. And in 1999, dogs were brought to the Russian Federation.
When and how to educate
The Jack Russell Terrier begins to develop independently at 2 months. Before bringing the puppy home, the owners remove wires, objects, and belongings. It's better to buy a couple of toys.

Jack Russell Terriers require fun 15 hours a day - playing in the fresh air, training. If you do not pay attention to your pet, he will soon begin to spoil things in the house.
Basics of raising a Jack Russell Terrier
When the pet has arrived home, they begin to learn the basic rules of behavior. Without them, further studies are impossible. Experienced Jack Russell Terrier owners use the following methods:
- They are accustomed to a diaper from the first day the pet arrives in the house. They take the puppy to the toilet after sleeping, feeding, when the dog sniffs the floor and behaves restlessly.
- First, the baby is taken outside for 10-20 minutes. When the pet becomes stronger, they gradually begin to increase the time and include active games.
- If the Jack Russell Terrier snatches the bowl when the owner is serving food, then they take it away and wait until the puppy calms down. From childhood he is fed according to a schedule in one place.
- When the pet arrives home, he is shown the available entertainment. Minimum 10 min. spend time playing each day.

Jack Russell Terrier training. How to stop barking
The loud and often annoying bark of a Jack Russell Terrier can drive you crazy. It is somewhat more difficult to stop a small dog from barking for any reason than a large animal. But dog handlers, breeders and simply experienced Jack Russell lovers offer a large number of methods for weaning a dog from barking for no reason.
It is best to avoid barking in the apartment at all; always stop your pet if he starts barking, begging for food or calling you to play. On the street, all bouts of barking should be condemned. And this must be done from the very first attempts of the animal to attract attention by barking.
Some terrier owners invent their own methods of weaning dogs from barking for no reason: they scare them with muzzles, bark back, squeak loudly, and lock their pets in a cage. This may work for some, but for others it won't matter.
Training rules
Owners of this breed cannot:
- Exhaust the puppy with long training sessions. At first, 10-15 minutes will be enough.
- Make concessions. You have to be confident and calm. It is better to change the intonation and volume of the sound.
- Train several commands at the same time. By loading a pet with a lot of information, the owner will not achieve high-quality results.
- Allow your Jack Russell Terrier to sleep on the bed. When a dog feels more important, he does not give in to training.
- Alternate discipline with affection. You should scold in a stern voice so that the puppy understands that the owner is angry.
- Hit the dog. Instead, you need to give the command “Fu.”
- Feel guilty when telling your dog “no.”
Training at 4 - 5 months
By this time, the Jack Russell Terrier puppy has already become accustomed to your home and usual walking areas, and no longer needs your support and care so much. He begins to flirt with other dogs, pretend that he does not hear you when you call him, and show a certain persistence and disobedience when performing various commands.
This means it's time to move on to full training . In classes at this age you can already be persistent and demanding. At the same time, the most important thing is not to overdo it, remember that classes should bring joy to both you and your dog, and only then you can achieve the desired result.
Required commands in 4 months
What commands are practiced by a Jack Russell Terrier puppy at 4 months:
- Calm movement next
to the owner with and without a leash, with landing when stopping, with a change in pace and direction of movement - Return to you
upon request - Staying
in a free or certain position (sitting, lying, standing) for a long time: if necessary, wait for the owner on the street, when visiting a store or other establishment - Indifferent attitude towards treats scattered on the ground
- Inhibitory command
to stop unwanted actions - Execution of a set of commands “sit”, “lie down”, “stand”
at a distance and near the leg, when giving commands by voice and gestures - Stop barking
on demand.
Stages of teaching commands
The process of practicing basic actions is conditionally divided into 2 periods:
From 2 to 6 months
From the 8th week they begin to learn the order to “sit”. The owner calls and says the command, raising the treat upward. For convenience, the pet will sit down. Repeat the action 5-6 times. With daily loads, the Jack Russell will begin to fulfill the command in 8-10 days.
To teach the “lying down” action, stretch your hand with food straight forward and lower it. The dog will lie down. To keep her from getting up, they hold her by the leash and then praise her.
When the dog is playing around, they begin to learn the “fu” command. The pet is taken away and the order is given. As soon as the Jack Russell Terrier has learned the action, give it a treat.
You need to teach the “come” command with friends. They choose a place for this. Give the puppy a treat and ask a person to support the pet at a distance of 1-2 meters. The owner shows the prize and says “come to me.” The person must release the animal. When the dog comes running, they praise him and give him a treat. Repeat 5-6 times.
Using the instant reward method, the commands “sleep”, “home”, “bring a toy” are learned.
6 to 8 months
At six months they begin complex training of the Jack Russell Terrier. They teach the dog to be able to behave on walks, on trips, at exhibitions.

In order for the dog to learn the “near” command, it is brought to its left leg. When the dog gets up, the prize is presented.

The “give paw” action is useful for contact with the owner. You need to take the treat in your hand and the dog’s paw in the other. They lift her up and say “well done” and give her encouragement.
Basic Commands
Nickname
They begin to accustom a Jack Russell puppy to it immediately after purchase.
When choosing a nickname
for a puppy, you need to remember that it should be sonorous and short: no more than two syllables .
"Ugh!"
This command means an order not to pick up anything from the ground or to immediately spit out what the pet has already grabbed in its mouth.
In order to teach it to a puppy, you need to take the object from his mouth and command “Ugh!” in a stern voice.
NOTE!
It’s not always possible to keep track of a dog, so to make your pet safer, it’s also better to play it safe and buy a muzzle. Read how to choose such an accessory here.
"It is forbidden!"
A prohibitory command means an order to stop some unwanted action.
It is taught in the same way as the command “Fu!”: first the command is given in a stern voice, and after a few seconds there is a sharp jerk with the leash.
"Place!"
You need to take the puppy to a rug or bed after he falls asleep on the floor or on the sofa and, after petting him, say: “Place!”
If the Jack Russell tries to leave, you need to hold him in place and repeat the command more strictly.
"To me!"
The owner shows the puppy a treat and commands: “Come to me!” After the pet runs up, reward it with praise and treats.
"Sit!"
The treat is not raised too high above the dog’s head and the command “Sit!” is pronounced. Trying to get it, the puppy will sit down.
"Lie!"
The treat is shown to the pet, after which it is lowered down and slightly forward. Wanting to get it, the puppy will lie down.
"Near"!
The command “Near!” is pronounced, after which the leash is pulled up so that the pet’s withers are near the owner’s left leg.
If the dog tries to run forward or to the side, then the command is given in a more stern voice, and if this does not help, a harsher jerk with the leash follows.
The first classes to teach a puppy basic commands are best done at home..
Preparation for the exhibition
After purchasing a Jack Russell Terrier, they are interested in the availability of vaccinations. If they are absent, contact veterinary clinics.
The admissions committee provides the following documents:
- Passport with rabies vaccination.
- Puppy card with pedigree.
- Veterinary certificate.
Pets must know basic commands, look well-groomed, and have their nails trimmed.

Alena: “Smart breed. We bought a puppy for training and exhibitions. Capricious by nature, but friendly and kind. Now a full member of the family, he won 2nd place and attracts the attention of the audience. The puppy’s future of winning is still ahead.”

Weaning off unnecessary barking
Barking is one of the methods of communication in dogs. They express their emotions and intentions to them. The timbre of the bark changes depending on the dog's condition. To eliminate unreasonable vocalization, you need to understand in what cases your pet begins to bark and adhere to certain rules:
- do not use the deny command (it is useless);
- do not praise the dog when it barks (even when fulfilling another requirement);
- do not punish the dog using physical violence;
- do not provoke the dog to bark.
The best option is a distraction maneuver. As soon as the pet gives a voice, the owner tells him the command “come to me!” and waits for it to be completed. If the puppy does not respond, then the demand is repeated, but in a slightly threatening tone. By being distracted by its implementation, the pet stops unwanted barking.
Most often, burrowing breeds have a tendency to bark for no reason. This occurs in Fox Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers. During the hunt, their task was not only to chase the prey, but also to bark at it before catching it.
