The drug contains two main components:

• mepregenol acetate, water soluble;
• ethinyl estradiol.

The action of mepregenol acetate and ethinyl estradiol is aimed at influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary system of the animal, the production of gonadotropic hormones by the pituitary gland. Thanks to this, it is possible to adjust the hormonal levels of animals – both females and males – as accurately as possible. Unlike other types of hormonal drugs of similar action, Sex Barrier is gentle and safe: it does not lead to irreversible changes in the reproductive system.

Important! The use of the drug does not exclude the restoration of the reproductive function of the animal’s body 2-3 months after stopping the use of the drug.

How to prevent a dog from going into heat?

The advantage of contraceptives over sterilization is that the medications have a temporary effect. After a certain time has passed after taking birth control, the bitch can breed and produce healthy offspring.

Sterilization of female dogs may be impossible for a number of reasons, such as pathologies, and sexual heat and aggressive behavior during estrus must be prevented using special means.

Types of contraceptives:

Drops

The drops are intended to interrupt estrus; they correct behavior and do not affect subsequent pregnancies.

The active period of activity of the gonads in females is accompanied by estrus. It occurs 2-3 times a year. The smell of discharge attracts male dogs whose testes function year-round.

• Passion flower - can be used for animals suffering from the negative influence of a stressful situation, showing jealousy and aggression.
• Motherwort is a more effective herb than valerian, but it should be used after consultation with a veterinarian.
• Baikal skullcap - helps even with the most acute nervous conditions of the dog. Dosage 5-20 drops depending on weight, applied 2 times a day.

Of course, we have not listed all sedatives for dogs; there are many more different remedies. However, this list is quite enough to help you figure out what exactly needs to be applied to your pet. Although it is always better to contact a veterinarian, because even aggression or fear can be symptoms that the animal is in pain.

It is also necessary to remember that all these means are only auxiliary and in most cases an integrated approach is necessary. The medicine should be given at the first signs of sexual arousal, applying drops directly to the tongue or with food or treats. The tablets can be crushed and added to food or given using an introducer - a tablet dispenser.

The daily dose should be divided into two doses and given to the pet in the morning and evening feedings. The manufacturer indicates in the instructions the recommended doses of the drug, they depend on the weight of the pet:

• less than 5 kg – 2 drops per day;
• from 5 to 10 kg – 2-4 every 12 hours;
• 10-30 kg – 5-8 drops twice a day;
• more than 30 kg – 18 or more, at the rate of 1 drop for every next 5 kg of weight.

The following dosage is established for tablets:

• animals weighing up to 5 kg – 1 tablet per day;
• 5-10 kg – 2-3 tablets;
• 10-30 kg – 3-4 tablets;
• more than 30 kg - at the rate of 1 tablet for every 10 kg of body weight.

The Sex Barrier should be used until the animal completely stops sexual arousal. The standard course duration is 5-7 days. If the medicine is used to shift estrus, you can give the medicine in a course of 5-7 days 1-2 weeks before the expected date of estrus. This way you can achieve a shift of 20-40 days.

As a contraceptive to prevent unwanted pregnancy, the medicine is given once. A double dose should be given to the female no later than 2 days after accidental mating.

Important!

The hormonal drug Pillcan 20 contains megestrol acetate 20 mg and a filler (sucrose) as the active ingredient. Pillkan 20 are water-soluble briquettes (in the form of sugar cubes) of white color with a dividing groove in the middle, weighing 5.5 g. They are packaged in 8 cubes in sealed plastic blisters, which are packed in 1 blister in cardboard boxes.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

The active ingredient of Pillkana 20, megestrol acetate, has progesterone-like properties. It inhibits the secretion of gonadotropins (luteonizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone) by direct action on the hypothalamus. If the drug is given before the onset of estrus, it, in appropriate doses, inhibits the secretion of gonadotropic hormones and prevents ovulation. If the drug is started at the beginning of the follicular phase (second or third day of estrus), this leads to interruption of estrus. When administered to males, megestrol acetate has an indirect effect on the regulation of behavioral traits. Megestrol acetate is easily absorbed in the intestines, biotransformed in the liver and after 1 - 2 days is excreted in the urine in the form of salts.

INDICATIONS

Prescribed to delay (interrupt) estrus in females, suppress sexual activity in males, eliminate behavioral symptoms associated with the period of sexual activity.

DOSES AND METHOD OF APPLICATION

The drugs are fed from the owner’s hand or added to food or drinking water.

To interrupt estrus, you should start giving Pillcan 20 at the first appearance of blood-red discharge in bitches and continue use for 10 days. During this period, keep the bitch away from males.

When signs of satyriasis (sexual arousal) appear in males, in order to obtain a sedative effect, the same doses are used as for interrupting estrus in females.

Body weight 10 – 20 kg 1 sugar cube for 3 days, then 1/2 sugar cube per day for the next 7 days.

Body weight 20 – 40 kg 2 sugar cubes per day for 3 days, then 1 sugar cube per day for the next 7 days.

Body weight more than 40 kg 3 sugar cubes for 3 days, then 1.5 sugar cubes per day for the next 7 days.

Heat delay:

If the dog’s pregnancy is undesirable due to some external reasons (exhibitions, competitions, moving, etc.), the time of estrus can be delayed. Administration of the drug should begin 7 days before the start of estrus and continue for as many days as it is desirable to delay estrus. Estrus will begin a few days after stopping the drug. Body weight 20 – 40 kg 1/2 sugar cubes per day. Body weight more than 40 kg 1 sugar cube per day.

SIDE EFFECTS

With prolonged or repeated use of the drug, the following side effects are possible: change in character, development of the mammary gland, increased appetite.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Do not use the drug to interrupt estrus if 4 days have passed since the beginning of estrus in females and 2 days in cats. Contraindicated for use in pregnant females and animals before puberty, as well as for diseases of the reproductive system (pyometra, metritis, endometritis, etc.), mammary tumors, diabetes.
