Instructions for use
Milbemax is used for cats of all ages, when treating them for helminths, as well as for preventive purposes. The dosage of the drug is determined depending on the physical weight of the pet. The minimum dose is 2 milligrams of milbemycin oxime and 5 milligrams of praziquantel - this corresponds to one kilogram of the cat's weight. Based on this, the conclusion suggests itself that the medicine is used to treat kittens when they reach a weight of 500 grams. As reviews from people who have used the drug show, treatment always leads to the desired result.
Preventive measures
For the prevention of helminths, Milbemax is used once per quarter, as well as unscheduled: 15 days before vaccination or mating. The drug can be used for preventive purposes for kittens older than one and a half months, at the end of pregnancy, as well as for lactating cats, but after 20 days after lambing. In addition, it is mandatory to carry out deworming before vaccination and mating.
Treatment with Milbemax
For effective treatment, you need to “feed” the animal with Milbemax tablets. For this purpose, it is recommended to refrain from feeding the cat for five hours. Then you need to choose the product that is best eaten by him.
Next, you need to determine the kitten’s weight and crush the tablet into powder. Mix the resulting powder with food and give it to the cat. You can also place the tablet on the base of the cat's tongue and, holding its mouth, stroke its neck. By stroking, the swallowing reflex is triggered, causing the animal to swallow Milbemax.
Small kittens and weakened adult cats should be treated with a medical syringe. But first, the medicine must be thoroughly crushed and mixed with water. Then the suspension is filled into a syringe and injected into the mouth of a cat or kitten. It is much better if the dose of the drug and the duration of the course of treatment are determined by a veterinarian. But, if there is no veterinarian, then you need to calculate the daily doses yourself.
Dosage
- 0.5 – 1 kg – half a pink tablet;
- 1-2 kg – one pink tablet;
- 2-4 kg – half a red tablet;
- 4-8 kg – one red tablet;
- 8-12 kg – one and a half red tablets.
Using the drug strictly according to the instructions, according to people's reviews, does not lead to negative side effects. Very rarely, cats have individual intolerance to the active substances of the drug that cause allergies. In such cases, it is necessary to stop giving the medicine and seek the help of a veterinary specialist.
The drug should not be used for kittens under one and a half months of age and should not be given to cats in the first half of pregnancy. It is also prohibited to be used on animals that are sick or undergoing the process of recovery from illness. The use of the medicine for cats that have been diagnosed with diseases and disorders of the kidneys or liver is completely prohibited. According to numerous reviews, Milbemax is the most effective medicine against helminths.
Indications and method of use
Milbemax for kittens is prescribed by a veterinarian for prophylaxis or for therapeutic purposes to carry out anthelmintic measures for:
- nematoses;
- cestoses;
- mixed nematous-cestous invasions.
Each patient requires an individually calculated dosage of Milbemax; tablets for kittens can be divided into two parts, taking into account age and weight.
Do not give the product to kittens less than 6 weeks old and weighing less than 0.5 kilograms.
The smallest dosage is 2 mg of milbemycin oxime and 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of weight.
Therefore, the Milbemax norm for kittens is as follows::
- with a weight of 0.5-1 kg, ½ tablet is prescribed;
- from 1 to 2 kg - a whole tablet.
The medicine is given to pets once, during meals, mixing it with food. In this case, it is imperative to control your eating. If your pet does not want to eat the “treat,” then you can forcefully administer the tablet by placing it on the root of the tongue, closing the mouth and holding it for a few seconds. To stimulate swallowing movements, you can stroke the kitten on the neck. Recently, the drug began to be produced with beef and pate flavorings, so feeding the medicine to a kitten will not be difficult.
In case of obvious invasion, the drug is used once. But to prevent re-infections, for preventive purposes, doctors recommend giving kittens Milbemax at least once a quarter.
Indications for use of the drug
Milbemax tablets are intended for the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal parasites in dogs, including:
- roundworm;
- nematodes;
- whipworms;
- cystodes;
- tapeworms.
If preventive deworming has not been carried out since the birth of your pet, then you need to pay attention to the characteristic signs of a dog being infected with parasites. Constant diarrhea and the appearance of a bloated tummy should alert you (this sign is especially typical for small puppies infected with roundworms from their mother)
Dogs infected with helminths become lethargic, lose appetite and weight.
A healthy pet must have shiny, thick fur. If nematodes are present, a rash appears on the animal’s skin, and the fur begins to fade and fall out.
But the most obvious sign of parasite infection is constant itching in the anal area (the dog constantly rubs its butt on the ground) and the presence of white ribbons or larvae in the feces. Ignoring such obvious symptoms can lead to severe damage to the animal's internal organs and even death. In addition, parasites can be dangerous to humans.
Instructions for use of Milbemax tablets
The drug is used for the prevention and treatment of the following helminthiases:
- toxocariasis;
- hookworm;
- taeniasis;
- echinococcosis;
- Dipylidiasis.
The advantage of Milbemax tablets is that there is no need to go on a fasting diet before using them.
How to give anthelmintic for cats in tablet form
According to the instructions for use, this anthelmintic for cats should be given once during morning feeding. To do this, crush the tablet and mix it thoroughly with pate, minced meat or other food familiar to your pet.
If an animal refuses to swallow tablets on its own, you need to know how to forcefully give them.
There is a specific scheme for this:
- take the cat on your lap, fixing the limbs;
- raise the muzzle and open the mouth, pressing the fingers of your free hand on the toothless edge of the lower jaw;
- place the medicine on the root of the tongue;
- close your mouth, leaving your jaw pointing upward;
- Gently stroke the front of the neck to speed up the act of swallowing.
How does the product work?
Dissolving and being absorbed from the intestines into the blood, deworming tablets in cats begin to act within an hour after feeding. The half-life and excretion from the body in urine and feces ranges from 3 to 13 hours.
During this time, the molecules of the active substances increase the permeability of the cell membranes of parasites to chlorine and calcium ions, causing disruption of the functioning of nerve and muscle cells, paralysis and death. In parallel with this, the destruction of the outer cover occurs, which during life resisted the effects of intestinal enzymes, ensuring the viability of the worms.
The tablets have a gentle effect on the cat’s body, without causing addiction or disrupting the embryonic development of fetuses in pregnant females.
How often to give Milbemax
When wondering how often to give a cat anthelmintic drugs, you should not think that pets that do not leave their apartments are not at risk of infection. Helminth eggs enter the room with people's shoes and clothes, plants and household items. Worm larvae can enter the cat's body with fleas, raw meat or fish.
Therefore, processing must be carried out once a quarter.
Feeding Milbemax before vaccination
Cats must be dewormed 14 days before vaccination. Milbemax is ideal for this purpose, as it is approved for use in kittens from six weeks, while the first vaccination is carried out at 8 weeks.
Dosage by weight
Pink tablets “Milbemax for kittens” begin to be given after the babies gain a weight of at least 0.5 kg.
Dosage by weight is:
- from 0.5 to 1 kg - 0.5 pink tablet;
- from 1 to 2 kg - 1 pink tablet.
For convenience, tablets for adult cats are coated with a red coating. Their dosage is:
- from 2 to 4 kg - 0.5 tablets;
- from 4 to 8 kg - 1 whole tablet;
- over 8 kg - 1.5 red tablets.
If in doubt about the choice of dose, it is better to consult a veterinarian.
Drug overdose
In case of an overdose of Milbemax, the animal may experience involuntary twitching of the muscles of the limbs and torso. These phenomena do not require medical intervention, as they resolve on their own within a day.
Side effects
As a side effect, some cats may have an allergic reaction to the components included in the medicine.
Feeding tablets to pregnant cats
Due to the safety of Milbemax for fetuses, it is advisable to feed it to pregnant cats 20 days before birth. This will prevent intrauterine infection of kittens with helminths. You can also use the medicine 14 days after lambing during the period of feeding the offspring.
Contraindications to the use of Milbemax
The medicine Mibelmax should not be fed to:
- kittens whose age is less than 6 months;
- animals that have not reached a weight of 0.5 kg;
- females in the first six weeks of pregnancy;
- cats suffering from infectious diseases;
- exhausted animals;
- pets suffering from liver and kidney pathologies.
If your cat develops itching, watery eyes, skin redness, rashes or other signs of allergic reactions after using the medicine, you should contact a veterinarian who will prescribe another anthelmintic drug.

Analogues of the drug
IMPORTANT! Analogue drugs have different doses of active ingredients and release forms!
Are there any effective analogues? Yes, and there are a lot of them. You can oh, “Pratel”, “Prasimek-D” and many others. The differences lie in both the dose of active ingredients and the release form. The specific prescription should be handled by a veterinarian, since only he knows about all the important nuances of treatment. Of course, if necessary, it is quite possible to use something cheaper, but only with a positive recommendation from the treating specialist.
The drug Milbemax for kittens and small cats is in most cases well tolerated by pets. Side effects can occur only in a few cases:
- The animal is sick or weakened. During any illness of the pet, the use of any anthelmintic drug is prohibited, since the unhealthy body will be subject to intoxication by the parasites decomposing inside it. Therefore, it is necessary to wait until the animal has fully recovered, and only then worm it.
- The cat has an individual intolerance to the active substances or allergic reactions to them.
- In case of an overdose of the drug, the animal may experience tremor, which disappears on its own after about 24 hours and does not require medical intervention.
When the drug enters the intestines, it is quickly absorbed into the blood and immediately begins its effect. The molecules of the previously mentioned active substances increase the permeability of the parasite's cell membrane to calcium and chloride ions, causing paralysis and death. Also, these substances destroy the outer cover of helminths, which protects them from the effects of intestinal enzymes.
Side effects and the likelihood of their development
The manufacturer reports that side effects are extremely rare and are usually associated with individual intolerance to some of the components of the drug:
- Oppression and apathy.
- A sharp increase in salivation. The saliva is foamy and viscous, hanging in icicles from the animal’s mouth.
- It is possible to develop a “drunk” or wooden gait.
- Sometimes there is severe trembling.
- In the most severe cases - partial or complete paralysis of the limbs.
In all these cases, the medication should be stopped immediately and a veterinarian should be called. The animal is given as much clean drinking water as possible.
Features of storing medicine
The presented product should be stored in a dark place, the temperature of which is from 5 to 25. Avoid freezing and exposure to sunlight.
The shelf life of the tablets is 24 months. But after the integrity of the packaging is damaged, they can only be used for six months.
The tablets can be prepared accordingly before giving. This is required, however, infrequently. We have already written that flavorings, which are an important component of the medicine, make it attractive to animals. In any case, if for some reason the pet stubbornly does not want to eat the drug, proceed as follows:
- First, the tablet, placed in a porcelain cup, is crushed to a powdery state.
- After this, it is diluted with such a volume of water that a semi-liquid, homogeneous mixture is formed.
- The resulting composition is poured into the cat’s throat using a regular syringe.
Prescribing Milbemax before vaccination
Unfortunately, many breeders forget that before vaccination the animal must be treated against worms. This is due to the fact that parasitic organisms secrete a huge amount of substances that can disrupt the formation of normal immunity. Accordingly, in this case, the effect of the vaccine will be either greatly reduced or completely distorted. In the latter case, there is a possibility of developing autoimmune pathologies.
To avoid such unpleasant and dangerous consequences, ten days before the expected date of vaccination, the cat is given Milbemax. In addition, before vaccination, we recommend checking the effectiveness of the antiparasitic agent by conducting a microscopic analysis of the stool. If worm eggs are found in them, the procedure must be repeated.
Analogs
- Of the tablet anthelmintics, Profender can be distinguished.
- For puppies, there is a medicine in the form of a paste - Dirofen.
- You can also try suspensions - febtal combo, prazicide.
In addition to medications, there are folk remedies for parasites. However, do not rush to give up all medications and poison the animal with unknown herbs. Before treatment with traditional medicine, carefully read the properties of certain plants, whether they will be harmful, whether they will cause allergies, etc.
What you can give to your pet:
- Carrot. Yes, yes, the most common and widely consumed product. When the carrot pieces pass through the intestinal wall, they remove the wall bugs. You can add it to porridge or give it just like that.
- Hulled pumpkin seeds in small quantities. Pumpkin seeds are not only effective anti-parasitic prevention, but also a good source of vitamins. The main thing is not to overdo it with the quantity, as too many seeds will be harmful.
You cannot give:
It is highly undesirable to give garlic to dogs. Contrary to popular belief, it is ineffective against reptiles in the animal’s body. Instead, garlic can cause serious complications such as gastritis. There are different variations of pseudo-medicine that will only harm the dog. Some people suggest giving your animal vodka against parasites (even a puppy!).
Pharmacological properties of Milbemax for dogs
Milbemycin oxime and praziquantel have a synergistic effect and together have a broad spectrum effect on larvae and mature nematodes and cestodes. Milbemycin oxime, which belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones that are released during the enzymatic activity of Streptomyces hygroscopkus var. aureolacrimosus, actively suppresses nematode larvae and adults, as well as nematode larvae Dirofilaria immitis.
The mechanism of action of milbemycin oxime is as follows: an increase in the permeability of chloride ions (CI) through cell membranes causes overpolarization of the membranes of nerve and muscle tissue cells and, ultimately, paralysis and death of the parasite.
In the animal's blood plasma, the maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime is achieved within 2 to 4 hours after taking the drug. Milbemycin oxime is excreted unchanged from the dog's body.
Praziquantel, an acylated pyrazine isoquinoline derivative, inhibits cestodes and nematodes.
The mechanism of action of praziquantel is as follows: an increase in the permeability of calcium ions (Ca2+) through the cell membranes of the parasite causes membrane depolarization, muscle contraction, destruction of the tegument and ultimately the death of the parasite. In the animal's blood plasma, the maximum concentration of praziquantel is achieved within 1 to 4 hours after taking the drug.
Praziquantel undergoes rapid and complete biotransformation in the liver. Praziquantel is excreted from the dog's body within 2 days in the urine. Milbemax in recommended doses are classified as moderately dangerous substances in terms of the degree of impact on the body of warm-blooded animals and do not have a sensitizing, embryotoxic, or teratogenic effect. Well tolerated by dogs of different breeds and ages.
Anthelmintic for cats Elanco Milbemax, 2 tablets. (1 tab/4-8 kg)
Milbemycin oxime and praziquantel exhibit synergistic action and together have a wide spectrum of action on larval and mature forms of nematodes and cestodes. Milbemycin oxime, which is part of the drug, belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones released as a result of the enzymatic activity of Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. Aureolacrimosus. Milbemycin oxime is active against nematodes parasitizing the gastrointestinal tract of cats, as well as the larvae of the nematode Dirofilaria immitis. The mechanism of action of milbemycin is due to an increase in the permeability of cell membranes to chlorine ions, which leads to overpolarization of the membranes of nerve and muscle tissue cells, paralysis and death of the parasite. The maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime in blood plasma is achieved after 2 hours. The compound is excreted from the body mainly unchanged, with a half-life of about 13 hours after oral administration of the drug.
Praziquantel is an acylated derivative of pyrazine isoquinoline and has a pronounced effect against cestodes and nematodes. By increasing the permeability of the parasite's cell membranes to calcium ions, it causes depolarization of the membranes, muscle contraction and destruction of the tegument, which leads to the death of the parasite and promotes its elimination from the animal's body. The maximum plasma concentration of praziquantel is achieved after 1 hour.
The compound is excreted from the body mainly in the form of inactive metabolites in the urine; the half-life is about 3 hours after oral administration of the drug. Milbemax belongs to the group of compounds that are moderately dangerous for warm-blooded animals; in recommended doses it does not have a sensitizing, embryotoxic or teratogenic effect. Well tolerated by cats of different breeds and ages. The drug is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms.
Indications:
Prescribed for preventive and therapeutic purposes for deworming cats with nematodes (toxocariasis, hookworm) and cestodiasis (echinococcosis, dipylidia, taeniasis).
Contraindications:
Increased individual sensitivity to the drug. It is prohibited to administer Milbemax to kittens under 6 weeks of age, cats in the first two-thirds of pregnancy, as well as animals suffering from infectious diseases and convalescent animals. Not recommended for use by cats weighing less than 0.5 kg. Should not be used in animals with impaired renal or liver function.
Side effects:
Allergic reactions are possible in animals hypersensitive to the components of Milbemax. With proper use and dosage, side effects are usually not observed. In case of an overdose, some cats may experience tremors, the symptoms of which disappear spontaneously within 24 hours and do not require the use of medications.
Directions for use and doses:
Milbemax is given to cats orally once, individually in the morning feeding with a small amount of food, or it is administered forcibly to the root of the tongue after eating food in a minimum therapeutic dose of 2 mg of milbemycin oxime and 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of animal weight.
Storage conditions:
With precautions according to list B. In a dry, dark place inaccessible to children and animals at a temperature of 5 to 25 ° C. Shelf life: 2 years. The shelf life after opening the blister is 6 months.
Milbemax tablets instructions for use
The drug is used for animals of all ages and breeds, its dosage depends on their weight. Per 1 kg there should be 2 mg of milbemycin oxime and 5 mg of praziquantel. From this dosage it is easy to conclude that the whole tablet can only be given to kittens that have reached a weight of 1.5 kg.
Before use, the animal does not need to be put on a diet or its diet limited.
Usually the medicine is given during the morning feeding, it is best to put it in a piece of food. If your cat is so sensitive that she refuses to take the pill, you will have to resort to force-feeding. To do this, it is better to fix the animal on its knees and put the medicine under the root of its tongue.
The dosage is as follows:
- kittens weighing 0.5-1 kg should be given half a pink tablet;
- if your small pet weighs 1-2 kg, then he is entitled to one pink pill.

When is the drug prescribed?
The drug is used for preventive purposes and to remove existing parasites. According to the manufacturer's instructions, it is effective against two common types of helminths:
- Nematodes. They affect the gastrointestinal tract and liver. The infected animal loses its appetite and coughs. With extensive damage, bloody vomiting and diarrhea occur.
- Cestodes. They affect the intestines and damage the mucous membranes. Causes digestive disorders, vomiting, loss of appetite. They can grow up to 1.5 m in length, which is why without treatment they often lead to intestinal blockage.
One of the active substances of the drug also destroys less common trematodes - parasites that attack the pancreas, gallbladder, lungs and liver of the animal. Symptoms include indigestion, vomiting, cough, fever. In this case, the drug is used only on the recommendation of a specialist.
The product destroys both adult parasites and their eggs, so in the vast majority of cases only one dose is required.
The drug can be given to kittens after six months.
For preventive purposes, it is given every 3 months, 2 weeks before vaccinations and before mating.
If necessary, you can use analogues of the product: “Pratel”, “Prasimek-D”, “Drontal”, “Profender”
Please note that the rules for using each of these medications have their own characteristics.

Well tolerated by cats of different breeds and ages. The drug is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms.
INDICATIONS
Prescribed for preventive and therapeutic purposes for deworming cats with nematodes (toxocariasis, hookworm) and cestodiasis (echinococcosis, dipylidia, taeniasis).
DOSES AND METHOD OF APPLICATION
Milbemax is given to cats orally once, individually in the morning feeding with a small amount of food, or it is administered forcibly to the root of the tongue after eating food in a minimum therapeutic dose of 2 mg of milbemycin oxime and 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of animal weight.
Milbemax dosage according to the cat's weight
Cat weight | Milbemax tablets for kittens and young cats | Milbemax tablets for adult cats |
0.5 – 1 kg | ½ tablet (pink) | — |
1 – 2 kg | 1 tablet (pink) | — |
2 – 4 kg | — | ½ tablet (red) |
4 – 8 kg | — | 1 tablet (red) |
8 – 12 kg | — | 1½ tablets (red) |
It is necessary to monitor the ingestibility of the drug. No preliminary fasting diet or use of laxatives is required. Milbemax can be used in kittens from 6 weeks of age. For pregnant cats, the drug is used in the last third of the pregnancy period, for lactating cats - 2 - 3 weeks after lambing under the supervision of a veterinarian. Preventive deworming is recommended to be carried out quarterly, as well as before vaccination and mating in the above doses.
SIDE EFFECTS
Allergic reactions are possible in animals hypersensitive to the components of Milbemax. With proper use and dosage, side effects are usually not observed. In case of an overdose, some cats may experience tremors, the symptoms of which disappear spontaneously within 24 hours and do not require the use of medications.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Increased individual sensitivity to the drug. It is prohibited to administer Milbemax to kittens under 6 weeks of age, cats in the first two-thirds of pregnancy, as well as animals suffering from infectious diseases and convalescent animals. Not recommended for use by cats weighing less than 0.5 kg. Should not be used in animals with impaired renal or liver function.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
No special precautions are required.
STORAGE CONDITIONS
With precautions according to list B. In a dry, dark place inaccessible to children and animals at a temperature of 5 to 25 ° C. Shelf life: 2 years. The shelf life after opening the blister is 6 months.
Main contraindications
Some animals have an allergic reaction to certain components of the drug. In this case, it should only be given under medical supervision.
There are other contraindications. It should not be given to kittens that are too small, weighing less than half a kilogram. In addition, it is contraindicated in the following cases:
- severe exhaustion of the animal;
- infection;
- the presence of serious liver or kidney diseases;
- The weight of an adult cat is less than 2 kg.
Also, this medicine should not be given to pregnant animals. Anthelmintics should be given before possible pregnancy, because some helminthiasis are transmitted to kittens through mother's milk.
If the animal is healthy and does not have the above problems, then everything should go fine. There may be a slight tremor of the limbs, but it goes away quickly.
Main characteristics of the product
The main active ingredients are praziquantel and milbemycin oxime. The latter substance is interesting because it is a bacterial enzyme that has a detrimental effect on helminths, leading to their paralysis and death. The maximum concentration in the body is observed two to three hours after administration.
Like any other medicine, Milbemax has rare side effects. They are expressed in isolated allergic reactions. If your animal often suffers from allergies, the drug should be administered exclusively under the supervision of a veterinarian.
We have already talked about very small kittens, but you also cannot give medicine to cats that suffer from infectious diseases, are exhausted, or have not yet recovered from surgery (serious illness). Oddly enough, Milbemax can be used for pregnant pets, but the animal must be under the constant supervision of an experienced veterinarian.
If by mistake you give your kitten half the tablet for an adult cat, then nothing particularly bad will happen. In such cases, severe trembling is often observed, which goes away on its own after some time. It is advisable to give the animal more water so that excess medicine leaves the body naturally and there is no severe intoxication.
Finally, before prescribing this drug, the veterinarian must find out whether the cat has chronic liver or kidney failure, since Milbemax should not be given in this case. After all, class III danger!
As mentioned earlier, Milbemax is a rather toxic drug, but when used correctly it causes virtually no side effects. Only occasionally, after using this remedy, cats may experience weakness and digestive problems. Most often, this effect is caused by an overdose or an allergic reaction.
The drug is contraindicated in kittens that weigh less than 0.5 kg. It is also not recommended to give this anthelmintic to pregnant and lactating cats.
Lethargy is one of the possible side effects of Milbemax
For some conditions that the cat already has, the use of Milbemax can lead to undesirable consequences:
- impaired functioning of the kidneys and liver;
- allergies and poor tolerance to individual components of the drug;
- severe exhaustion or during illness.
The only thing that is known about the interaction of Milbemax with other drugs is that it can be taken together with Selamectin, another drug against parasites. Other drug interactions should be avoided. If an animal is prescribed drugs to treat any disease, only a veterinarian should decide whether to use Milbemax.
IMPORTANT!
Milbemax should not be given to cats if:
- exhaustion of the animal;
- the presence of an infectious disease;
- kidney or liver problems;
- the presence of allergic reactions to the active ingredients of the drug;
- kittens are younger than 6 weeks old or weigh less than 500 g;
- the weight of an adult animal is less than 2 kilograms;
- during cat pregnancy.

In other cases, as a rule, there are no complications. There are no side effects of Milbemax for cats. If your cat develops a tremor after taking the medicine, do not panic; its symptoms will go away on their own within 24 hours.
Instructions for use and dosage
The product is allowed to be used for preventive purposes, but not more than 1 tablet every quarter. Before use, you need to know how to give Milbemax to your dog correctly. Milbemax is administered with food; if it is impossible to give the medicine to the pet using this method, forced placement of the tablet into the area of the root of the tongue is used.
A single use of Milbemax is enough to start the deworming mechanism and begin the dog’s recovery process.
Dosage of Milbemax in the presence of helminths:
- small dogs and puppies up to kg - half the table;
- small dogs up to 5 kg - 1 tablet;
- small dogs from 5 to 10 kg - 2 tablets;
- adult pets (5–25 kg) – 1 tablet;
- adults (25–50 kg) - 2 tablets;
- large dogs (50–70 kg) - 3 tables.
When using the drug, it is forbidden to smoke cigarettes, drink drinks and eat food to avoid the entry of drug particles into the body (a toxic effect is possible). Along with the tablets, there are special stickers inside that allow you to make convenient notes about the date of the course of treatment with the drug in the dog’s passport.
Possible complications in case of overdose
When an extra Milbemax tablet (more than the norm) enters the dog’s body, behavioral changes are observed associated with the appearance of a nervous gait, convulsions, and increased salivation. There are common cases of inhibition in a pet in the perception of surrounding people and events.
In case of an overdose, the dog may experience convulsions and a nervous gait.
Occasionally, muscle weakness (paresis) is observed: this negative condition is manifested by the complete inability of the animal to stand on its front or hind legs. Therapeutic correction of overdose symptoms is not required: the changes disappear within 24 hours without the use of other medications. Adverse reactions also include intestinal upset (diarrhea), vomiting and drowsiness.
Contraindications and side effects
Like all medicines, Milbemax has a number of contraindications, when it is forbidden to give it to kittens:
- in case of personal intolerance to components;
- in case of low weight (less than 0.5 kg);
- in case of young age (less than 6 weeks);
- with pathology of the kidneys and liver;
- in case of a weakened body due to illness.
Rarely, when using the drug, kittens may show signs of allergy. In case of overdose, tremors may occur. This condition does not pose a danger to the animal and goes away on its own without any treatment within 24 hours. It is only recommended to give the kitten more water to quickly remove excess substances from the body and prevent intoxication.

Side effects
Milbemax is considered one of the safest drugs for deworming, since clinical signs of overdose can only occur when the recommended dose is exceeded by more than 10 times! And irreversible disorders develop when the recommended dose increases by more than 80 times! Thus, owners do not have to worry about having incorrectly calculated the dosage of the drug.
If you give Milbemax to collie or sheltie dogs, especially those with a mutated gene, you can expect a temporary loss of coordination, as well as foaming at the mouth and vomiting. In all other dogs, side effects are mild and usually resolve within 24 hours.
The manufacturer admits that in rare cases, after taking the pill, the following may develop:
- diarrhea and vomiting;
- a sharp increase in itching in the anal passage (associated with the active release of helminths);
- a sharp increase in appetite;
- profuse salivation.
Despite the fact that an overdose is extremely unlikely, every owner must be able to recognize dangerous symptoms in a timely manner. Since the tablets have a pleasant taste and smell, a dog, left unattended, can easily eat a dangerous amount of Milbemax.
The following signs should alert you:
- trembling in the pet's limbs;
- general lethargy and apathy;
- constant drooling;
- refusal of food.
Be sure to give your dog plenty of clean water and activated charcoal. But if the symptoms have not disappeared after 24 hours, or the animal’s gums have turned pale or convulsions have appeared, you should immediately consult a veterinarian. You also need to monitor the feces: if the dog has not had a bowel movement within 48 hours, this means that the gastrointestinal tract may be blocked by dead parasites. Surgery may be required to remove the worm balls.
Side effects of Milbemax
There are no side effects observed when using this drug. The exception is hypersensitivity and individual intolerance to some of the components included in the drug.
In this case, the cat may experience an allergic reaction and in such a situation it is necessary to contact a veterinarian as soon as possible to relieve the symptoms of allergy and poisoning. Problems may also arise if the drug is overdosed.
If the dose has been exceeded, the result may be symptoms such as:
- tremor;
- nervousness;
- salivation;
- diarrhea (diarrhea) and vomiting;
- trembling limbs and unsteady gait.
These symptoms disappear within 24 hours. However, to avoid serious consequences, it is best to take your cat to a veterinary clinic for a consultation.
Emergency help! To remove most of the anthelmintic drug, give the cat enterosgel at the rate of 3-4 ml per 5 kg of weight. For an adult cat - 1 teaspoon, for a kitten - half a teaspoon.
Composition, release form
The drug "Milbemax" is a combined modern deworming drug that eliminates intestinal parasites in the body of a four-legged pet. The base substance of this medicine is milbemycin oxime, which simultaneously belongs to the group of anthelmintics and antibiotics.
This substance can effectively infect nematodes that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract of a pet and penetrate the bloodstream, as well as the liver, lungs and kidneys. “Milbemycin” easily enters the blood plasma and acts on the larval stage of parasites for several hours, after which it is completely eliminated from the animal’s body.
Praziquantel, which is part of the veterinary drug, affects nematodes and cestodes, effectively affecting the cell membranes of helminths. The dead parasites are digested and then leave the pet’s body naturally. The peak concentration of this component in the blood plasma is observed 1-4 hours after using the drug, and then the substance is biotransformed in the liver tissues. The active component praziquantel is completely eliminated from the cat’s body along with urine in just a couple of days.
Release form
Milbemax is one of the most common medications intended for the treatment of helminths in cats. The drug is available in tablet form. It contains many different components, but in addition to the two main active ingredients, milbemycin oxime and praziquantel, the rest only help deliver them to the intestines, and then to the blood. The following are used as auxiliary ingredients:
- microcrystalline cellulose;
- sodium carmellose;
- povidone;
- lactose;
- colloidal silicon;
- magnesium stearate;
- hypromellose;
- macrogol;
- talc;
- food supplement with beef flavor "Artificial beef flavour".
Milbemax is available in two different formats:
- for kittens and young cats weighing up to 2 kg (1 tablet contains 4 mg of milbemycin oxime and 10 mg of praziquantel);
Milbemax can be used in kittens from 6 weeks of age.
- for adult cats (16 and 40 mg, respectively).
There are only anti-worm tablets, packaged in blister packs of two. Here we should dwell in detail on the available types:
- For young animals and kittens. Milbemicim - 4 mg, praziquantel - 10 mg per pill.
- For adult cats. 16 mg and 40 mg of active ingredient, respectively.
Remember that “adult” pills have a red shell, while “children’s” pills have a pink tint. This is clearly visible in the photo, so it’s quite difficult to make a mistake when purchasing.
Among other things, the first category is marked with the imprint KK, and the second with the imprint BC. Can be used within three years from the date of issue. The anthelmintic should be stored in a dry, cool place, protected from sunlight. Animals should not be given the drug from a blister that is not sealed properly.
Pharmacological properties
The medication belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones, which have antibiotic activity against helminths. The instructions for use also indicate that the use of milbemax for dogs allows you to launch an additional process - enhanced enzymatic activity, which is destructive for parasites.
Milbemycin oxime entering the body increases the permeability of chloride ions, causing irreversible changes leading to paralysis and death of foreign organisms. Praziquantel acts on the same principle, but increases the permeability of calcium ions, which affect the mechanism of muscle contraction.
The active ingredients of Milbemax are excreted from the body in the urine within two days.
The active ingredients are excreted unchanged along with physiological fluids, mainly urine, within two days. The maximum accumulation of active substances in the blood plasma is observed after 1–4 hours.
Contraindications for use
The use of tablets unnecessarily loads the urinary system, so it is not recommended to give Milbemax to weakened animals. There are also other restrictions.
Taboo on taking the drug:
- individual intolerance and hypersensitivity;
- infectious diseases;
- 2 weeks or less lifespan;
- liver and kidney disorders;
- weight less than 500 grams.
The drug is also not recommended for use by certain breeds - collies, shelties, bobtails. When testing the product on animals of these breeds, intolerance to macrocyclic lactones was revealed. It is allowed to prescribe Milbemax for large dogs, but the dosage in this case is strictly observed in the concentrations specified in the instructions.
List of indications for use
Helminthic infection is the main indication for the use of the drug, however, Milbemax does not affect all, but certain parasites. The drug is prescribed for nematodes and cestodes, as well as in the presence of these two varieties in the animal’s body (with mixed helminthic infestation).
The main indication for the use of Milbemax is helminthic infestation.
Most species of cestodes die after consumption, from Dipylidium caninum to Trichuris vulpis. In order to prevent dirofilariasis, it is allowed to give medication at intervals of 30 days.
Another advantage of the product is that there is no need to go on a starvation diet or prescribe laxatives before using the product.

Store the drug in the manufacturer's sealed packaging in a dry place, protected from light, away from food and feed, at a temperature of 15°C to 25°C.
Milbemax tablets for cats should be kept out of the reach of children.
No special precautions are required when disposing of unused medicinal products.
II. Pharmacological properties Milbemax tablets for cats are a combined anthelmintic drug with nematodocidal and cestodocidal action.
Milbemycin oxime, which is part of the drug, belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones released as a result of the enzymatic activity of Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. aureolacrimosus, is active against larvae and adults of nematodes parasitizing the gastrointestinal tract of cats, as well as larvae of the nematode Dirofilaria immitis.
The mechanism of action of milbemycin is due to an increase in the permeability of cell membranes to chloride ions (Cl-), which leads to overpolarization of the membranes of nerve and muscle tissue cells, paralysis and death of the parasite. The maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime in the blood plasma of cats is achieved after 2 hours. The compound is excreted from the body mainly unchanged, with a half-life of about 13 hours after oral administration of the drug.
Praziquantel is an acylated derivative of pyrazine isoquinoline and has a pronounced effect against cestodes and nematodes. By increasing the permeability of the parasite's cell membranes to calcium ions (Ca2+), it causes depolarization of the membranes, muscle contraction and destruction of the tegument, which leads to the death of the parasite and promotes its elimination from the animal's body. The maximum concentration of praziquantel in the blood plasma of cats is achieved after 1 hour. The compound is excreted from the body mainly in the form of inactive metabolites in the urine; the half-life is about 3 hours after oral administration of the drug.
Milbemax tablets, in terms of the degree of impact on the body of cats and kittens, are classified as moderately hazardous substances (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), in recommended doses they do not have a sensitizing, embryotoxic or teratogenic effect, and are well tolerated by cats of different breeds and ages. The drug is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms.
III. How to use Milbemax tablets for cats are prescribed for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes for nematodes, cestodes and mixed nematode-cestodes infestations caused by the following types of helminths:
- Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus multilocularis (cestodes);
- Ancylostoma tubaeforme, Toxocara cati (nematodes).
A contraindication to the use of the drug is the animal’s increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug (including a history of it) and severe renal and liver dysfunction.
Kittens under 6 weeks of age, as well as malnourished animals and animals with infectious diseases are not subject to deworming.
“Milbemax tablets for kittens and young cats” should not be used on kittens weighing less than 0.5 kg, “Milbemax tablets for adult cats” should not be used on cats weighing less than 2 kg.
The drug is administered to cats once during feeding with a small amount of food or administered forcibly to the root of the tongue after eating food in a minimum therapeutic dose of 2 mg of milbemycin oxime and 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of animal weight, based on:
Animal weight, kg | Milbemax for kittens and young cats | Milbemax for adult cats |
0,5-1 | 1/2 tablet | — |
1-2 | 1 tablet | — |
2-4 | — | 1/2 tablet |
4-8 | — | 1 tablet |
8-12 | — | 11/2 tablets |
Rules of application
There are four types of Milbemax:
- for puppies or small dogs;
- for adult dogs of large breeds;
- for kittens;
- for adult cats.
This division is not a marketing ploy: each variety is noticeably different in the concentration of active ingredients, so you should never use the wrong one (for example, giving a kitten a product for puppies).
Let's now find out how to use Milbemax for cats.
Tablets for kittens are pink, and for adult animals - red. The dosage is calculated based on the weight of the pet:
Animal weight | Number of tablets |
For kittens | |
0.5–1 kg | 0,5 |
1–2 kg | 1 |
For adult animals | |
2–4 kg | 0,5 |
4–8 kg | 1 |
8–12 kg | 1,5 |
According to the instructions, the drug should be given during morning feeding, mixed with food that is attractive to the pet.
Some cats willingly eat these tablets and even try to get to them on their own, while others refuse them. If your cat won't eat the medicine, hold her in your lap and open her mouth with your fingers and place the tablet on the back of her tongue. Stroke your pet's throat to trigger the swallowing reflex. Then check to see if the tablet remains in the animal's mouth.
Preliminary diet and use of laxatives are not required.
Please note that before using the drug, it is necessary to get rid of fleas - they carry worm eggs, and if these parasites remain on the animal’s skin, everything will soon start all over again. Before purchasing this product, be sure to consult your veterinarian
This is especially important when it comes to a pregnant female, sick or weakened animal
Before purchasing this product, be sure to consult your veterinarian

In sealed packaging, the product can be stored for 3 years. If you have used half of the tablet, the second one can be stored for no more than 6 months. It is strictly forbidden to give your pet an expired product.
Instructions for use
Many breeders often refuse anthelmintic drugs in the form of tablets, since feeding them is often associated with some difficulties: the animals simply refuse to take the tablets, and the owners face a difficult “fight” with a stubborn cat. The instructions for using Milbemax for cats are extremely simple: in the morning feeding, you need to feed the animal the drug in an amount corresponding to the cat’s weight. But it is worth noting that for kittens and young animals there are some tablets (pink), and for adult animals there are others, red. The medicine package contains 2 tablets, which is enough for even the largest and most well-fed cats.
Cat weight | Milbemax for kittens and young cats | Milbemax for adult cats |
0.5 – 1 kg | 0.5 tablets | — |
1 – 2 kg | 1 tablet | — |
2 – 4 kg | — | 0.5 tablets |
4 – 8 kg | — | 1 tablet |
8 – 12 kg | — | 1.5 tablets |
We should not forget about the shelf life: after opening the blister, the tablets can be stored for no more than 6 months, while in undamaged original packaging, the tablets can be stored for three years. It is strictly forbidden to carry out deworming with an expired drug!
As for the question “how to give Milbemax to a cat?”, which is often asked by breeders on zoo and veterinary forums, then everything is simple here too - at the morning meal the animal is fed its dose of the drug.
If the cat refuses to take the pills on his own, you need to take him, sit him on your lap, and hug him tightly. After this, with your free hand, lift the animal’s muzzle up, open its mouth with your fingers, and place the tablets deep into the root of the tongue. After this, close the cat’s mouth and, stroking the throat, make sure that the swallowing reflex is triggered. It is best to hold the animal in your arms for a few more minutes, stroking and calming it. This will ensure that the cat has swallowed the pills and will not spit them out around the corner.
Another nuance: unlike many other anthelmintic drugs, the medicine we are considering does not require a starvation diet for your pet.
As we have already mentioned, the instructions for Melbimax for cats state that the best time to take the tablets is the animal’s morning meal. It is also worth adhering to the norm and avoiding an overdose: the effect will not improve, but the cat’s well-being may suffer.
Active substances
An anthelmintic drug is a complex combined agent that has a strong effect against cestodes and nematodes. The main active ingredient of Milbemax is milbemycin oxime, which has a detrimental effect on the parasites angiostrongylus vasorum and larvae that parasitize the pet’s gastrointestinal tract. Since worms pose a great danger to puppies and adult dogs of small breeds, veterinarians recommend starting the prevention of parasitic infestations from the first months of the animal’s birth.
The second most important component of the drug is praziquantel, which affects cestodes and nematodes. Its mechanism of action is based on the high permeability of parasite cell membranes to calcium ions
This entails membrane depolarization, muscle contraction and destruction of the tegument, which ensures the natural removal of dead helminths from the dog’s body. Milbemax tablets are available in two forms - for adult large dogs and for puppies or small individuals. The difference between the drugs is the amount of active substances.
Purpose | Milbemycin concentration | Praziquantel concentration |
For puppies and small breeds | 2.5 mg milbemycin | 25 mg praziquantel |
For large pets | 12.5 mg milbemycin | 125 mg praziquantel |
Release form and active components
Milbemax for small dogs and puppies
Milbemax for dogs is available in tablet dosage form, two tablets in a blister. The active compounds are milbemycin (in the form of oxime) and praziquantel. The manufacturer took care of both puppies and adult animals:
- for small dogs and young animals, the content of active ingredients in the tablet is 25 mg of praziquantel and 2.5 mg of milbemycin;
- Large older animals should choose a drug containing 125 mg of praziquantel and 12.5 mg of milbemycin.
It is impossible to confuse the tablets, since they are marked accordingly and differ in shape: in the first case they are oval with the inscription AA, in the second they are round with the engraving CCA. Among the additional ingredients of the composition are: lactose, cellulose, silicon, magnesium stearate and others.
Instructions for use
Each package of Mibelmax necessarily contains instructions for use. It indicates the main indications for use and dosage. How and when to give cannot be determined independently. It is advisable to consult a specialist. When prescribing, he will take into account the circumstances surrounding treatment, contraindications and foresee possible problems.
When to give?
Mibelmax is recommended for internal use as an effective anthelmintic.
It should be given when infected:
- Taenia spp.;
- Toxocara cati;
- Echinococcus multilocularis;
- Ancylostoma tubaeforme;
- Dipylidium caninum;
If helminthiasis is suspected, as well as as a preventive measure for worms, as prescribed by a doctor, it is necessary to take a break in feeding for at least 5 hours. Only after this give the cat a pill. If your pet refuses, you can mix the medicine with food or treats. For a kitten, the tablet is crushed and only then added to food or drink.
In special cases, powdered Milbemax is recommended to be diluted with a small amount of water and poured into the cat’s mouth using a syringe. It is easy to give medicine to a cat instead of morning feeding.
