Pharmacological properties

Hyaluronic acid is a compound that is present in many tissues of humans and animals. The main property of the substance is that it holds water molecules, forming a gel-like structure. Hyaluronic acid is present in synovial fluid, which coats the joints, protecting them from drying out and delivering nutrients to them.

With age, after injury and illness, the concentration of this component in the body decreases. Synovial fluid is not produced in the required amount, water molecules are not held together. The joints dry out, become weak, and the animal experiences discomfort due to the friction that arises between them.

The introduction of a drug with hyaluronic acid normalizes the situation. The substance restores the viscosity of synovial fluid and improves tissue nutrition. For joint diseases, painkillers only reduce the severity of symptoms, but it is necessary to act on the root of the problem in order to completely get rid of it.

Bonharen has the following effects:

  • restores joint mobility;
  • eliminates discomfort and pain;
  • relieves inflammatory processes formed due to friction of dry joints;
  • restores the consistency of synovial fluid;
  • stimulates the restoration of damaged joint tissues;
  • restores the protective function of joints.

The drug restores the animal's ability to move without discomfort. The dog becomes active again.

Pharmacotherapeutic group: Bonharen belongs to the group of ophthalmic moisturizers of natural origin.

Hyaluronic acid, which is part of the drug Bonharen®, is a compound of natural origin, part of connective, epithelial and nervous tissues, is one of the main components of the extracellular matrix, and is found in many biological fluids, including eye tissues. Hyaluronic acid protects the cornea from damage, prevents moisture loss, increases water retention on the corneal surface, and also increases corneal moisture due to its ability to bind water molecules. Hyaluronic acid promotes the healing of erosions on the cornea and prevents their occurrence. When applied topically, hyaluronic acid is practically not absorbed from the surface of the cornea. In terms of the degree of impact on the body, Bonharen is a low-hazard substance (hazard class 4 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), in recommended doses it does not have a local irritant or sensitizing effect, and does not have cumulative properties.

Indications for use

Bonharen is intended for the treatment of joint diseases in cats, dogs and horses. Intravenous administration is prescribed in the following cases:

  • arthritis (inflammation of joint tissue);
  • arthrosis (dystrophic change in articular cartilage);
  • osteochodrosis (ossification of cartilage with further destruction of the joint);
  • tendinitis (inflammation of tendons);
  • tenosynovitis (inflammation of the tendons of the genital organs in females);
  • non-infectious bursitis (inflammation of the tissues of the synovial bursa);
  • other joint diseases.

Instructions

The instructions for use of Bonharen say that the drug is administered intravenously. Wash your hands with disinfectant, put on disposable medical gloves, and wipe the dog's skin with alcohol. It is most convenient to inject the drug into the cephalic vein of the forearm, that is, into the upper part of the paw. A tourniquet is applied above this place.

The dosage is determined by the doctor, but usually the average values are used:

  • for animals weighing less than 5 kg - 0.1 ml of solution per 1 kg of weight;
  • for dogs heavier than 5 kg – 0.05 ml of solution per 1 kg of weight.

Not every owner will be able to give an intravenous injection on their own. The instructions for use indicate one more possible method of administering the medicine - subcutaneously. Then the injection is given at the withers. This injection method should be discussed with your doctor.

Depending on the disease, its severity and the dog’s well-being, the veterinarian prescribes from 3 to 7 injections. You don’t need to do them every day - you need a break of 5-7 days.

If Bonharen is used to treat eye diseases, then 1-2 drops of the medicine should be dripped into each conjunctival sac. The doctor will tell you how often to do this - between procedures there should be an interval of 2 to 12 hours. The general course of treatment is 5-7 days.

Mode of application

The injection solution is intended for subcutaneous or intravenous administration. The exact treatment regimen is determined by the veterinarian, taking into account the degree of development of the disease, the condition and age of the animal, as well as its weight. For dogs weighing less than 5 kg, Bonharen is administered at the rate of 0.1 ml per kilogram, for larger dogs - 0.05 ml/kg.

Important! The usual course of treatment is 5-7 days. Injections cannot be prescribed or canceled independently - only a doctor can assess the effectiveness of therapy.

When treating eye diseases, the solution should be dripped every 2-12 hours, 1-2 drops. If ointments and other eye medications are additionally prescribed, the interval between their use should be at least half an hour. In this case, Bonharen is first dripped, then the ointment is applied.

Contraindications and side effects

Since the composition of the drug is simple, there are almost no contraindications. Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound that is present in the body of every mammal. The only negative reaction can be caused by sodium chloride. Individual intolerance to this component is a contraindication for the use of Bonharen. For other animals, including puppies and pregnant females, the drug is harmless.

The medicine cannot be used in conjunction with cationic antimicrobial substances - erythromycin, amoxicillin, cefkin. They cause Bonharen to clot.

There are also few side effects. If a dog is allergic to the solution, then there will be characteristic symptoms - itching, redness of the skin, rash, nasal discharge, signs of inflammation in the ears, etc. Usually there are no serious manifestations, and the dog gets better without additional treatment.

Application and action of Bonharen

Bonharen is a modern effective drug for the successful treatment of joint diseases in dogs, cats, horses and other animals. It belongs to the group of chondroprotectors, restores cartilage tissue and prevents its further destruction. Injections of the drug return joints to normal functioning, eliminate pain and other manifestations of the disease.

The main active component of the drug is hyaluronic acid of natural origin, obtained from synovial fluid and connective tissues of mammals. It improves the quality of the joint fluid and its lubricity, eliminates all the consequences of the chronic inflammatory process and restores the physiological functions of the joint. Bonharen for horses, dogs and cats reduces the risk of complications of joint diseases and provides a positive effect for a long period of more than six months.

The drug is used to treat chronic tendinitis, tendovaginitis, bursitis, osteochondrosis, arthritis, arthrosis in dogs and other animals. It is administered intravenously or intramuscularly as prescribed by a doctor from 3 to 7 times with a 5-day break between injections. For the treatment of arthritis in dogs, the recommended dosage is 0.05 ml per 1 kg of weight. For cats, the dose is 0.1 ml per 1 kg of animal weight. To treat bursitis in a horse, 0.01 ml of Bonharen is used, multiplied by the weight of the animal.

Bonharen is well tolerated by animals and does not cause adverse reactions. In some cases, slight swelling and redness may appear in the injection area, which disappear within one day. The drug cannot be used together with antimicrobial agents such as erythromycin, cefquin, etc. They contain cationic substances that cause the drug to clot. Bonharen for dogs is also profitable to buy from a financial point of view. The cost of a course of treatment will be significantly cheaper compared to long-term use of other analogues of this chondroprotector.

Reviews

Ekaterina, 42 years old, Tomsk

“My Amadeus began to limp, let's go to the vet. They prescribed a course of Bonharen. I was afraid to inject myself, so every week we went to the clinic, the course lasted 1.5 months. Amadeus began to run freely. The only negative is that the drug is expensive (3 thousand rubles per bottle). We needed 3 ampoules - one was enough for 2 injections.”

Vitaly, 36 years old, Ufa

“We injected Bonharen into Rottweilers at the kennel. They gave it subcutaneously at the withers, 0.5 ml per 10 kg of weight, that is, 1 ampoule was enough for 2 injections in a dog weighing 60 kg. For the course, 3 bottles were taken for each Rottweiler. The effect is noticeable immediately – it becomes easier for the animal to walk, activity returns, and appetite improves.”
