American dogs are a fairly popular category of four-legged pets. Animals are divided into several groups, each of which has its own individual characteristics and characteristics.

Peculiarities

Today, American dog breeds are very popular among both experienced breeders and novice dog breeders. Breeding four-legged animals in the United States of America began several centuries ago. The first “breeders” were settlers and Indians.

It must be said that American scientists bred animals not out of idle curiosity, but for specific purposes. Thus, the work functions of four-legged animals included security, protection, hunting, fishing and other areas of activity.

By crossing various breeds, scientists tried to achieve not only ideal physiological capabilities and mental characteristics, but also a beautiful exterior.

Breed overview

Today, there are a huge number of dog breeds that were bred in America. Let's look at the most popular varieties of four-legged animals with their names.

Fighting

At a certain stage in the development of breeding work in the United States of America, scientists placed great emphasis on breeding fighting breeds of dogs. During this time, some breeds became very popular and are still widespread today.

Fighting dogs are animals that need proper education and training. If you ignore this issue, the animal can show aggression and be dangerous to humans - even causing physical harm and death.

American Bulldog

This breed of dog is one of the most common fighting species. Essentially, there are 2 varieties of the American Bulldog: classic and standard.

The classic variety of the American Bulldog is a breed that has heightened guarding instincts. The dog's body is well developed, it has strong muscle mass and strong bones. The classic type is close in its characteristics to the English bulldog type.

The standard variety of the American Bulldog has a more athletic and athletic body structure.

Pitbull

Representatives of the pit bull breed are animals whose main task was to participate in dog fights, as well as baiting wild animals. The dog's character is distinguished by such qualities as courage and reliability. The animal is quite strong and powerful in its physiological indicators.

Pit bulls are dogs that are distinguished by well-developed mental and intellectual abilities.

It is best to entrust animal training to professional dog handlers.

Hunting and riding

Another large group of American four-legged pets are hunting and riding animals. In fact, there is a huge variety of breeds in nature that fall into this category, but we will only look at a few of them.

American Cocker Spaniel

This variety was officially adopted and registered by the American Kennel Club in 1947. Thus, we can say that the cocker spaniel is a fairly young American breed. The character of the animal is friendly and sociable; such a dog will become a true friend for all members of your family.

Today in nature there are several possible colors of cocker spaniels: black, red, brown.

In addition to such solid colors, colors with tan, as well as combinations of several uniform colors, are allowed.

American Water Spaniel

The Water Spaniel was bred in Wisconsin. Today, this breed of dog is one of the symbols of this territory. The dog has a fairly strong and proportional build, its body is covered with curly, dense hair.

The animal plays the role of a pet perfectly. The Water Spaniel is even-tempered, friendly and active. He quickly becomes attached not only to his owner, but also to all members of the family in which he lives.

The spaniel can tolerate a variety of negative environmental conditions and has a pronounced sense of smell.

Companions

Companion dogs are those animals that are suitable for home keeping. These animals differ from the categories described above primarily in their character. Companions are friendly and easy-to-care pets.

Pomsky

The Pomsky is a breed that is essentially a crossbreed. Thus, the variety is a cross between a Pomeranian Spitz from England and a Husky from Siberia. People often call Pomskies “mini-huskies.” In appearance, the dogs are very attractive: they are small in size and have fluffy fur. If we talk about numerical characteristics and indicators, the largest representative of the Pomsky can reach 5 kilograms in weight, and its height does not exceed 40 centimeters.

Today, scientists and veterinarians distinguish several subgroups of Pomsky: fox Pomsky, plush husky, white Pomsky, brown with blue eyes, short-haired.

The color of a dog can be very diverse, but the most popular is the color that resembles that of a husky.

Puggle

This breed of dog is considered decorative. It, like the previous variety, is a cross. Breeding of the animal involved such breeds as beagle and pug. In fact, there is no single standard regarding the appearance of this dog breed. Animals can have a variety of colors or different anatomical structures.

The idea of breeding puggles belongs to an American breeder named Vols Havens. He began his breeding activities in 1990. At the official level, this breed is not recognized today.

Bombay cat

The Bombay cat is very muscular, and weighs more than it seems at first glance.
The charming snub-nosed Bombay panther, despite its exotic name, was bred in the “blue grass state” - Kentucky. Burmese cats were purposefully bred with black American Shorthair cats. Already in 1958, the desired result was obtained - a miniature yellow-eyed predator with dense, smooth fur and a light athletic build. The breed was recognized in 1976 by the CFA.

By nature, a typical Bombay is a nuclear mixture of a cat, a dog and a monkey. Active and curious, they will never let you get bored, coming up with more and more new tricks and tricks. Bombay cats really enjoy the company of people, but without being particularly intrusive - after all, there are so many interesting things in the world. So if the owner is busy, the mini-panther will always find something to do. Bombay people have a soft and gentle voice.

How to choose?

First of all, you need to figure out what goal you are pursuing by getting a pet. If your choice falls on fighting dogs, then remember that they need proper training, but companion dogs will not be able to perform any functional duties. Having decided on a specific category (fighting, hunting, sled or companion dog), you can begin to determine the most suitable breed.

Particular attention should be paid to studying the physiological and mental characteristics of the animal. Make sure that this or that breed can live in your apartment or house, that it will not show aggression towards other pets living with you or towards children.

Also, read the rules for owning a dog. Make sure you can follow all the recommendations of the experts.

For more information on the characteristics of the American Bulldog breed, see below.

Character

Representatives of the breed are distinguished by their independent and dominant character. Because of this, such a dog is highly not recommended for novice dog breeders, as it will be difficult for them to get along with it. At the same time, for an experienced breeder such a pet will become a faithful friend who will not pose any danger to the owner, members of his family, as well as to the kept pets. In order to calmly get along with a bandog in the same house, you should show him dominant behavior when communicating from the very beginning, so that he perceives the owner as a leader. Otherwise, the animal will begin to dominate and strive to take the role of leader in the family. The American Bandog is a complex dog breed.

A hereditary predisposition to aggression requires correction from an early age, when the owner shows his pet that aggressive behavior in any form is not acceptable. The dog's high intelligence and devoted character are very helpful in this matter, and with proper upbringing the animal quickly understands what is required of it. Additionally, competent socialization of the pet is carried out, which helps to accustom them to calm behavior during walks, when they have to meet other animals and people. A properly raised dog will not show aggression towards children he knows, even if their games with him are quite harsh, but at the same time, he should not be left alone with children, since due to his large size and some carelessness, the dog can easily cause injury, accidentally stepping on or sitting on top.

In relation to strangers, the dog's character is distrustful, and in some cases even hostile. As a result, it is necessary from an early age to teach your pet to distinguish welcome guests in the house from intruders from whom it is necessary to protect the home. High intelligence with leadership qualities and an independent character, thanks to which the dog makes its own decisions, make it an excellent guard, but not a watchman, since it is not inclined to bark. Even if a dog attacks, it usually acts silently, without attracting attention to itself, without warning of its attack by growling. When an intruder enters the home, the dog will not indicate his presence, but then, at best, he simply will not allow him to leave, and at worst, he can inflict severe bites, even those that will lead to death. Because of this, burglars try to avoid this breed.

The aggressive character traits and leadership inclinations of the American Bandog dog lead to the fact that representatives of the breed can often perceive their fellow dogs they meet on a walk as contenders for their territory and leadership, which is why they will get into fights with them. These dogs also react extremely viciously to the intrusion of other animals into their territory. At the same time, representatives of the breed will get along absolutely peacefully with the pets with whom they grew up, and not only with dogs. The behavior of the bandog is especially unpredictable in relation to homeless relatives, since he perceives them as especially dangerous, from whom he must immediately protect his owner. This feature of the animal requires walking only with a muzzle and a very strong leash, since the dog’s strength is not small and it can break it.

Top 10 most popular American dog breeds - popular breeds in the USA with photos

Americans today keep more than 70 million pet dogs in their homes, and more than two-thirds of American households owned at least one dog. Of the top 10 most popular breeds in the United States, 5 breeds are of German origin, the rest are of British and Canadian origin. In general, Americans prefer large dogs, the vast majority of which are European.

Labrador is of Canadian origin. This breed is considered throughout the world to be an exemplary family dog, excellent with children, intelligent and eager to please its owner.

The breed was originally bred to hunt birds, its good memory and developed instincts are ideal for catching fallen birds.

Golden Retrievers were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1925. Before this, the breed was relatively rare in the US, although it was already extremely popular in the UK. The happy-go-lucky Golden Retriever and his happy-go-lucky, sweet personality make him a favorite among many American dog owners.

The German Shepherd is of Germanic origin and has a checkered history in America. After World War I, its popularity declined significantly as anti-German sentiment spread. But after that, thanks to the media and developed intelligence, the popularity of the breed began to grow again.

This is a typical British breed that loves children, has boundless affection and wants nothing more than to be close to its owner. Although the bulldog was originally bred for bull baiting, its aggressive personality traits were completely smoothed out over several generations.

Beagles are the most popular hounds in America. Although the exact origins of the Beagle are still unknown, the breed first appeared in England in the Middle Ages. The breed was created to track burrowing animals by smell. The beagle's adorable floppy ears help it catch scent by collecting it around its head when its nose is tilted toward the ground.

One of the few popular toy dogs in America, the Yorkie may be tiny but has a big personality. The popularity of these dogs is far from stellar, but they have a whole army of fans who provide the breed with a stable place in the top ten for many years to come.

Quirky, loyal, energetic and agile, the Boxer makes an excellent guard dog and companion dog. However, despite his energy, the Boxer will be equally happy relaxing with you in front of the fireplace or lying on the rug. The German boxer is part of a trend in the United States that sees Americans starting to adopt more mastiff-type dog breeds.

Another German breed, the poodle, has dense curly hair and the highest intelligence (ranks 2nd on the list of the smartest breeds). The poodle has 3 varieties: toy, small and large. Although the Poodle is not the most popular breed in the United States today, it, like the Labrador, has been one of the most popular breeds in America for many decades.

Dog breeds that were bred in the USA

We like herding dogs from Germany and Australia, setters from Ireland and England, and water dogs from Portugal and Spain. Even the Labrador Retriever, which is considered a typical American dog, is actually a Canadian breed. But there are still several popular dog breeds bred in the United States. They hail from the mountains of North Carolina, the snowy terrain of Alaska, and the bustling city streets of Massachusetts.

Northwest Explorer: Alaskan Malamute. This furry dog breed is native to the 49th state. His ancestors helped the ancient Eskimos transport their sleighs and goods across snowy, desert landscapes. The Alaskan Malamute became especially popular during the Alaska Gold Rush in 1896, when miners were willing to buy sleighs and dog sleds from local residents at exorbitant prices.

Farmers' favorite: Rat Terrier. The word "rat" is literally translated from English as "rat". Rat Terriers were bred to become a versatile dog breed for the American household. Their main task is to catch rats and other pests, as well as hunt small game. Rat Terriers were created by mixing breeds: the Whippet and the Italian Greyhound gave them speed, and the Beagle had an excellent sense of smell. President Theodore Roosevelt was a fan of rat terriers, which were among the animals he and his family brought to the White House.

Ultimate beauty: American Eskimo Spitz. This white, fluffy dog breed was developed in the 19th century by German immigrants to the United States by mixing the German Spitz and Italian Spitz breeds, so it is not surprising that it received its name.

New England Adventurer: Chinook. This rare breed of sled dog was born thanks to musher Arthur Treadwell Walden of Wonalansett, New Hampshire, who bred dogs of an unknown breed with “northern” huskies on his farm, resulting in tan puppies. One of these puppies was named Chinook. He and 15 other dogs accompanied Admiral Richard Byrd during his expedition to Antarctica in 1927.

Public favorite: American Staffordshire Terrier. The American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier are very similar, which is why both breeds are often referred to simply as “pit bulls.” The dogs were popular among wealthy Americans and prominent politicians, who bet on them during dog fights. Staffords are also loved by farmers for their skills and sociability. World War I hero Sergeant Stubby is believed to be a cross between a Boston Terrier and a Pit Bull Terrier.

Midwest Mystery: American Water Spaniel. The origins of the American Water Spaniel remain a mystery, but it may well be a descendant of the now extinct English Water Spaniels, which are known to have been brought to America. The breed was discovered in the mid-19th century in the Fox River Valley in Wisconsin. Interest in the breed waned after World War II, but Dr. Fred J. Pfeiffer single-handedly revived it, largely by promoting the idea that the breed was “American Made.” The American Water Spaniel is currently the official dog breed of the State of Wisconsin.

New England Gentleman: Boston Terrier. These funny dogs are the result of crossing the English Bulldog and the now extinct White English Terrier. Despite their English roots, modern Boston Terriers are American to the core.

Mid-Atlantic Hunter: Chesapeake Bay Retriever. When a British brig was wrecked off the coast of Maryland in 1807, two Newfoundlands were rescued. They were named Sailor and Canton. The dogs had excellent abilities as retrievers. People began breeding them with local dogs and they eventually became the ancestors of today's Chesapeake Bay Retriever. This hunting dog, native to the Chesapeake Bay coast, is capable of taking 100 to 200 ducks in a day.

Southern Scout: Plott Hound. The Plott Hound is native to the mountains of western North Carolina. This breed was bred for hunting, home guarding and herding. The ancestors of the Plott Hound are five Bloodhounds that accompanied the German emigrant Johann Georg Plott to America in 1750. The Plott Hound was recognized as the official state dog of North Carolina in 1989.

Fearless Farmer's Helper: Toy Fox Terrier. This little farm dog protects America's barns and barns from rats and other small pests. The ancestors of the Toy Fox Terrier are the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Chihuahua and the Manchester Terrier.

Southern Charmer: Red Coonhound. The Red Coonhound is a strong and resilient dog. The ancestors of this breed are foxhounds, brought to America by colonial settlers from Scotland and Ireland, and local hounds. Famous Georgia fox hunter and dog breeder George Birdsong contributed greatly to the development of the Red Coonhound (or Redbone Coonhound). This breed was only recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2009.

The most popular American dogs: Review of the best +Video

There are not so many American dog breeds that are really in demand among other countries of the world.

It is very strange that there are not many American dog stars, since the USA occupies a leading place among countries involved in dog breeding.

There is an opinion that the first dogs that appeared in America got there by land along with moving nomads.

Domesticated dogs were true members of the tribe and helped the people they lived with in many ways. Dogs participated in hunting, along with humans, were protectors of the tribe from various wild animals, dragged things with the help of a team, etc.

Is the American Molosser a new breed of dog?

The debate continues over whether the legendary giant dogs actually existed and whether they can be revived in modern conditions. One of the clearest pieces of evidence is the work of breeder J. Houser, who lives in Salt Lake City - it seems that he managed to recreate the ancient Mesopotamian breed, which became extinct 7 thousand years ago. We are talking about a friendly and affectionate American Molosser puppy named Euphrates, who already at nine months of age weighs more than 82 kilograms with a total height of 180 cm and 80 cm at the withers. He is the largest puppy in the world, has incredible strength, and eats 18 daily servings of food for ordinary dogs. His photos amaze Internet users. It's hard to believe that these are real pictures of a puppy and not an adult male.

When a person had a need for a dog to perform a certain role

... he tried to breed a breed capable of coping with this role, for example, more powerful dogs were bred for guarding, faster ones for hunting, etc.

One of the reasons for the meager list of American dog breeds is the tendency of American breeders to breed fighting dog breeds or large guard dogs.

The second reason is the love of American citizens for European and Canadian dog breeds.

Among domestic dog breeds, truly domestic dogs were bred, with a friendly disposition and an easy-going character.

American dogs are a source of pride for American families, which is why they are often adopted by local residents themselves.

Selection of breeds

In this selection you can find the most popular types of American dog breeds.

Fighting dogs

For a long time, American breeders were breeding fighting dog breeds, which needed to be made larger, stronger, more powerful, and ruthless than other dog breeds.

Such dogs took part in dog fights.

The first American fighting dog breed was registered as the Pit Bull Terrier.

Prominent representatives of fighting breeds of American dogs are:

  • - bandog;
  • - Staffordshire Terrier;
  • - American bulldog;
  • - bully.

Also, one of the most popular breeds of American dogs is the American Akita.

Akitas are large dogs with a loyal and kind character, loving freedom, movement, and long walks.

Based on the history of the origin of these breeds, when getting a fighting dog, you must remember about its timely and proper upbringing, since fighting genes can manifest themselves if you miss the moment of training, and you risk getting a very dangerous animal.

American breeds from the Molosser group

In the United States, many Molosser breeds were developed and spread throughout the planet. Each of them has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. The most popular breeds include the American Bandog, Bulldog, Mastiff, Pit Bull Terrier and Amstaff.

American Bandog

American Bandoggy Mastiff, Sphinford's Bendog are alternative names for this breed, bred for the purpose of participating in battles and protecting the territory. The animal's fighting talent and protective qualities, strength, endurance and intelligence make them ideal guards and protectors. Bandoga is distinguished by strong immunity, impressive size, and massive muscles. He is merciless when enraged, which is why he is banned in some countries. Although Bendogs are loyal and sometimes playful, they are not at all suitable for the role of a companion, but they serve well in the military and police forces.

  • American Bandog. Photo from Instagram account @canalphakennels

An adult American Bandog is a dog with a powerful skeleton and strong body, weighing from 46 to 67 kg, taller than 50 cm. The head is massive, with a wide frontal bone and erect, pointed ears. The coat is short, smooth, and harsh.

Bendogs are extremely active and massive; living in a small apartment is torture for them. A mansion with a fenced area is what you need. You should not put him on a chain, otherwise he will become angry and intractable, but free running and regular exercise will reduce aggression and make the dog balanced.

How to care for an American Bandog? To do this you need to follow simple recommendations:

  1. With daily walks lasting an hour or longer, you should take advantage of every chance to take your dog out into nature.
  2. It is better not to appear in public places at all, preferring fenced areas, or “going out in public” on a short leash with a muzzle.
  3. From the first days, accustom the dog to the place.
  4. Brush weekly, wipe with a damp cloth and massage glove, bathe no more than 3 times a year.

The average life expectancy of a Bendog is 12-16 years, the most vulnerable organ is the eyes (cataracts, retinal atrophy). The most common diseases: obesity, epilepsy, dysplasia.

The uniqueness of their character lies in their ability to recognize a person’s aggressiveness at the slightest sign and act immediately - this is an ideal bodyguard. He will not ingratiate himself and fawn over the owner, keeping his emotions to himself. Bandog owners must complete a training course and raise their pet properly, because most cases of unmotivated aggression and attacks by these animals are associated with the connivance of the owners.

American Bulldog

Fearless, strong, loyal, kind, affectionate breed. An excellent companion and protector for the whole family. Despite his massiveness, power and protective qualities, he gets along well and plays with children. The dog is a leader, so inexperienced and weak-willed people should not take such a dog - it will be the main one in the house, dictating its own rules. Dogs of this breed are also called Ambuli, Old English White Bulldogs. They are popular in many countries around the world. The classic and standard types of ambulets differ significantly in their characteristics.

The classic American Bulldog (Johnson type) has excellent watchdog qualities, is used to protect territory, and is a wonderful companion. The muzzle is shorter, the body is larger and more powerful than that of other representatives of the breed. The standard type of ambulee is the ideal fearless pursuer, the “catch dog.” He is good at hunting, farming, and serving in the police. The muzzle is elongated with increased salivation. Athletic, light, athletic build.

All representatives of the breed have a large square head, a short neck, and drooping ears. Weight from 35 to 60 kg, height up to 70 cm at the withers. With proper care, it can live for 12 years or more.

Heat and frost are dangerous for a dog, which should be taken into account when walking, purchasing special clothing in winter and carefully monitoring signs of overheating in summer. Appearing in society only wearing a muzzle of a bulldog model.

An American Bulldog should not be given room for imagination - when walking, the owner must set the rules for active play, otherwise he will engage in free creativity at home, damaging furniture and things. Boredom and lack of structured activity will make the dog uncontrollable and aggressive.

A special feature of ambulatory care is the daily care of the folds of the short muzzle and oral cavity (the risk of early loss of teeth in the breed). American Bulldogs often have watery eyes; they need to be wiped with special lotions. The coat will have to be combed with a mitt 2-3 times a week, otherwise falling hairs will be everywhere.

The most common diseases: food allergies, dysplasia, congenital deafness and heart defects, snoring and difficulty breathing.

American Mastiff

Bred in Ohio by Frederica Wagner, who set the goal of eliminating salivation from the English Mastiff - she succeeded. In 2000, the offspring obtained from crossing with the Anatolian Shepherd were recognized as a separate breed by the Continental Kennel Club, but the FCI considers them to be mixed breeds. Be that as it may, representatives of this breed are unique, they have a calm, balanced character, for which they are loved all over the world. They are not aggressive, but have innate guard qualities and are wary of strangers. Infinitely devoted to the family, they love to be the center of attention and participate in all events at home, tend to dominate, willful, smart, and often lazy. The owner must have a strong character and win the role of leader, ensure early socialization of the puppy, educate him correctly and strictly, without using physical violence.

American Mastiffs are distinguished by their large size, strength, lean build with a straight back, and rounded, wide chest. The large head is rectangular in shape, the ears are drooping and set high. The coat is smooth, short, and beige in varying degrees of intensity. Short-haired American Mastiffs cannot tolerate cold weather.

They are not very active at home, so they can be kept in apartments. Caring for a pet involves:

  1. Daily brushing with a mitten during shedding period and 2-3 times a week on other days.
  2. Wash the face after eating, paws and belly after every walk.
  3. Brushing your teeth twice a week with a special brush and toothpaste.
  4. Clean the inside of your ears and eyes daily.
  5. Shortening of nails monthly.

Like all members of the American Molosser breed, Mastiffs should undergo regular routine veterinary examinations. With good care, the dog will live up to 15 years.

American Pit Bull Terrier

Breed qualities of a pit bull: stubbornness, endurance, stamina, aggressiveness, cockiness, the ability to make high jumps, lack of fear and insensitivity to pain. If he is “wound up,” it is extremely difficult to calm him down. All this remains with the American Pit Bull Terrier from the times when they were bred in the USA for dog fights. In many countries, the import of these dogs into the territory of the state is prohibited.

Modern breeders cultivate other qualities, and with reasonable training by an experienced owner and early socialization, the pit bull will be a friendly, curious, confident member of the family, and not a killer. Excessive severity, violence or abandonment will make it a dangerous animal; with an adequate owner, the same pit bull terrier will be everyone’s favorite, getting along even with children.

  • American Pit Bull Terrier. Photo from wikipedia.org

These dogs are not adapted to kennel keeping and fit perfectly into the apartment area due to their medium size (height up to 60 cm and weight up to 40 kg). The coat is short, without undercoat, the belly is bare - they cannot stand the cold and can become seriously ill. They cannot stand loneliness and being kept on a chain; even in old age they frolic like puppies. Pit bulls need to burn off their energy by going for a walk, otherwise they will start causing mischief in the house.

Can live up to 17 years in good conditions.

Amstaff

The Staffordshire Terrier has gained a reputation as an inappropriate, aggressive, man-hating dog with a death grip. However, many people keep them in their homes, assuring them that they are playful, energetic, loyal friends and absolutely not dangerous. They perform excellently in the service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations thanks to their detective abilities, and are an example of endurance, courage, and power. A case was recorded when an Amstaff, with its own weight of 30 kg, was able to drag a load weighing 135 kg.

The advantages of the breed include good health, intelligence, unpretentiousness in nutrition and care, excellent trainability, and absence of odor. Amstaffs rarely bark, get along well in an apartment, but are irritable, capricious, touchy, require attention, early socialization and training, and need a strong owner-leader with a strong character.

The elegant, fast, muscular staff reaches a height of 48 cm, and its weight does not exceed 30 kg. If you plan to keep it on the site, you need a warm enclosure with a booth. Daily physical activity is an essential condition for raising a dog, preventing the manifestation of unreasonable aggression. She will be happy to accompany her owner on a bike ride. If the owner does not encourage the dog’s aggressiveness and gives it due attention, the staff will become a devoted friend and protector.

Results

Most American dog breeds were officially registered only in the 80s, but there are also relatively ancient dog breeds whose roots lay in America.

Americans, according to statistics, keep about 70 million dogs, the majority of which are European breeds.

Most often, Americans own Labradors, which are of Canadian origin.

Below are the cities of America, and the dog breeds that are most loved by the residents of this city:

  1. New York - French bulldog;
  2. Los Angeles - Golden Retriever;
  3. San Francisco - German Shepherd.

Many American dog breeds are not well known, but are still attractive for their physical and external characteristics and unique character, corresponding to the country from which they come.

Over time, American breeders moved away from breeding exclusively fighting breeds of dogs, and today, many representatives of American breeds become truly domestic and full-fledged members of families around the world.
