Review of cat breeds with big ears

The choice of cats with large ears is very large: among them there are both loyal natures and animals with a wild disposition. The size of the ears does not in any way affect the acuity of hearing, and the only parameter that distinguishes them from other felines is their improved ability to cool themselves. The thin skin of the ears has hundreds of blood vessels that cool at the slightest change in air temperature. In hot weather, blood circulates faster in the body and more of it passes through the ear capillaries. It is not for nothing that many cats that originate from countries with hot climates have impressively sized ears. But this list also includes those animals for which breeders actively worked on the size and shape of their ears.

Siamese

Due to the wide-set ears and pointed ends, the elongated muzzle of the Siamese cat appears triangular. In addition to the non-standard size of the ears, these animals have a fit, graceful body, toned limbs and neck, and almond-shaped eyes. They have a special coloring, which makes it impossible to confuse the Siamese with another breed - dark spots on the paws, tail and head are a must. Siamese cats have a loud voice, are very affectionate towards people and require a lot of attention from them.

The price of Siamese kittens starts from 3,000 rubles.

Abyssinians

Small cats are distinguished by a strong muscular body and large cone-shaped ears. The ears are directed slightly forward, so it seems that the animal is constantly alert. This breed has an attractive coat, the color of which is called “safari”: the hairs have a double or triple color, which creates the impression that the coat shimmers in the light. They have a complex disposition, a curious and playful character.

You can buy an Abyssinian kitten for 10,000-40,000 rubles.

Orientals

Graceful animals with thin limbs, a long tail, sparkling eyes and soft fur without undercoat. The ears of Oriental cats deserve special attention - the breed standard states that they should be triangular, pointed and continue with the line of the cheekbones. These animals are distinguished by their loyal character, so many compare their disposition to that of a dog.

The price of a kitten with documents ranges from 20,000-40,000 rubles, while on the bird market you can find an oriental from 3,500 rubles.

Oriental cat

A graceful, flexible, unforgettable cat with an elongated muzzle, a long tail and large ears. Orientals became the progenitors of many modern breeds and passed on their “earedness” to their heirs. As experience shows, the appearance of the Oriental cat is not to everyone’s taste, despite the pets’ high sociability, playfulness and canine devotion.

More about Oriental cats

Devon rex

Huge ears are the first thing that catches your eye when you see a Devon Rex. They have a wide base and a rounded tip, are set low and look almost to the sides. Devon Rexes have soft, curly fur, a flattened face with high cheekbones and round, large eyes. They are loyal and playful pets with wonderful dog-like personalities, which is why they, like dogs, wag their tails when they are happy about something.

Average prices for Devon Rex kittens are 15,000-30,000 rubles, depending on class and blood lines, but adult animals are cheaper.

Maine Coon

Unlike other breeds, the pointed ears of Maine Coons, which are located on the very top of the head, are decorated with “tassels”. They are giants in the pet world with long, thick hair that can weigh up to 15 kg. Despite their size, they are distinguished by a calm, friendly character and never release their claws without a serious reason. Maine Coons have a favorable attitude towards water, and they also love to dip their paws in a bowl of water before drinking.

The average price of Maine Coon kittens is 15,000-50,000 rubles.

Semi-longhair cat breeds

Balinese cat

These cats never grow to be giants; they are usually small or very small. The Balinese were born in Thailand, but this does not prevent them from communicating well with the whole world. You still have to look for such an open cat, striving to love and be loved!

Cymric

The Cymric cat comes from Canada. Some consider it a long-haired version of the Manx, but Canadians are sure that they have their own breed and it has the right to exist! Stocky, muscular and round are the main characteristics of the Cymric breed. They are also trainable and easy to bathe, as they simply adore water and water procedures.

Kurilian Bobtail

This is the Russian version of the short-tailed cat. The pom-pom tail, frost resistance and canine habits are the unofficial standard of the Kuril Bobtail breed. The length of the tail is different for each representative of the breed, traditionally varying from 2 to 8 vertebrae. The absence of a tail at all is a disqualifying sign.

LaPerm

Again a rex cat breed with wavy hair. Laperm is both American blood and oriental spices. In addition to curly hair, breeders note the silence of laperms. These are not the cats that wake you up in the morning with deep cries, but the ones that pull you out of your sleep with affectionate rubbing of the owner.

Munchkin

The Ulybaka cat is a munchkin cat. The length of its knife is three times shorter than the length of its body. A dachshund cat sometimes behaves like a kangaroo cat - it sits on its short hind legs and props up its body with a strong tail. Munchkins arrived in our open spaces only in 2001 and so far munchkins are not particularly popular.

Somali (Abyssinian Longhair)

Beautiful animals with a muscular, flexible body, long, brightly colored hair and a fluffy tail. The large, alert ears have a wide base and moderately pointed tips, and the inner surface of the auricle is covered with tufts of hair. They are active, playful and sociable, get along well with other pets and love long walks in the fresh air.

The price of kittens starts from 6,000 rubles.

Turkish Angora

These cats differ from other representatives of the “eared cats” by their non-Oriental origin. Another distinctive feature of the breed is almond-shaped blue, sometimes multi-colored, eyes, and a predominantly snow-white, silky coat. Angoras have a neat muzzle and high-set ears, which are decorated with tufts of thick hair. These are smart, affectionate pets who are very attached to their owner, so they will be ideal companions for lonely people.

The breed is not exotic and rare, so average prices for Turkish Angora kittens start at 2,000 rubles.

Black cat breeds

Bombay

The only breed with a strict standard for black coloring was the Bombay breed. All kittens that have a different color or inclusions on black are considered rejected.

In the 50s, a breed was developed in the USA, inspired by the beauty and grace of the real panther. Short-haired black cats have become very popular. A small, neat head, an elegant body and a jet-black color without a single spot - all this makes the Bombay cat unique. Kittens are usually born with blue eyes, but as they age, the eye color changes to yellow.

Important: The character of this animal is very unusual. The breed combines the habits of a cat, a dog and a monkey. Bombays easily get used to home life and get along with children and other animals with ease. Active, playful and good-natured cats will become a wonderful friend to any owner.

Turkish Angora

A spectacular beauty, the Angora cat is one of the most ancient breeds. She has long, fluffy, silky fur. According to legend, in ancient times they were even used instead of napkins during meals; fat was easily removed from the hands thanks to the soft wool.

The breed comes in a variety of colors, but the most impressive are, of course, black with yellow eyes and white.

This breed has no problems with photographs; they are very photogenic. They are often featured in advertisements and films.

Important: The Angora cat is very smart: she easily learns to open doors, turn on lights and even bring objects in her teeth.

Oriental

By crossing the Siamese breed with short-haired cats, they got another amazing variety of cats. A small, muscular cat with large ears and a slightly elongated muzzle was called Oriental.

Orientals come in a wide variety of colors. But if the cat is black, then the nose and even the toes are also jet black.

Important: These cats are very loyal, friendly, playful, and require a lot of time from the owner for care and communication.

Devon Rex

This breed is of extraordinary beauty! The wavy coat, large eyes and ears make this breed very interesting. The black color is highly valued, but is not common. One of the most important advantages is their hypoallergenicity. Even a person who is allergic to animal fur can own these cats.

Important: Devon Rex is inquisitive and affectionate. He adapts well to a new place, loves communication and an active life.

Cornish Rex

Another breed of cats that can be not only black, but also curly. Their fur resembles plush, forms various curls and patterns on the body, and looks great in photos.

Long legs, large ears, thanks to which the cat resembles a bat, developed muscles are the distinctive features of the Cornish. The body is flexible and curved, the tail is like an elastic twig.

Important: Cornish Rex become attached to their owner, love to sit in his arms, and are very affectionate. They have difficulty withstanding loud noise, shouting, and large companies. But they themselves will not meow often or show aggression.

Japanese Bobtail

The most striking feature of the breed is the tail. It is very short and can be ball-shaped, hooked or straight.

The breed comes in many colors, but it also comes in pure black.

Unusually, in order to obtain healthy offspring, it is necessary for animals of a short-tailed and a regular breed to be crossed. If both parents have a short tail, then the kittens will be born sick and will not be able to survive.

Important: Cats of this breed are smart and inquisitive. They make a lot of sounds and it's very similar to talking. An ideal breed for families with children. The animals are not aggressive at all, they happily communicate and play with kids.

American Bobtail

Cats of this breed are quite large, their weight can reach 7 kg. The tail is short, but very mobile, reminiscent of a hare's tail. A wide head, large eyes and short legs also indicate belonging to the breed.

Important: The main feature of the American Bobtail is intelligence. The animal is easy to train, quickly gets used to a leash and enjoys taking long walks with its owner.

Siberian

Many breeds echo the names of the territories where the animals live. For example, a Siberian cat.

The recognizable domestic cat breed is distinguished by thick, long hair with a thick undercoat. With such a fur coat, they are not afraid of any frost, but they can easily tolerate heat. Siberian cats are excellent hunters and protect the house from rodents.

The breed has many colors, but black is a separate group. A coal-black cat with green eyes and gorgeous fluffy fur looks great.

Important: The cat has high intelligence. She is highly trainable and can easily learn several tricks. She adores her owner and her family, is very loyal, but does not like strangers.

Norwegian forest

This breed fully lives up to its name. Whiskers on the cheeks, a thick water-repellent undercoat, tufts on the ears, and “pants” on the hind legs and a “collar” grow for the winter.

In character and appearance it is very similar to the Siberian breed, but the coat of the Norwegian Forest is shorter and smoother.

The most exquisite color of the breed is black.

American Curl

An amazing breed with unusual ears. They seem to be turned inside out and bent back. Kittens are born with normal ears, but only with age do slightly more than half of the animals' ears begin to curl up in a characteristic way.

One of the first breeds that, according to standards, is allowed to have both long and short hair.

Important: These cats are like children. They love to play and fool around. They adore children and will always accompany them in fun and entertainment.

Canadian Sphynxes

Representatives of this breed have very large, widely set ears with rounded tips. Sphynxes have a round body, a wide chest, a thin long tail and widely set forelimbs. The unusual appearance is added by smooth skin with many folds on the neck, forehead and limbs. At the same time, they can be completely bald or have a thin, almost invisible fluff.

Prices for Sphynx kittens start from 5,000-8,000 rubles.

Domestic cat breeds with big ears

There are many cats with big ears. These are mainly breeds of African and Asian origin, as well as exotic hybrids and individuals with an original appearance, the result of complex selection.

Siamese cats

A small cat with a graceful physique, neat outlines of the head , the gaze of large blue eyes and short, smooth hair looks touching, but has a complex character. Despite its intelligence and amenability to training, the Siamese cat is capricious, willful, and jealous, so the kitten must be raised from the first day it appears in the house.

Features of appearance - light main color with dark blurry pigmentation of the limbs, ears and tail, a muzzle decorated with a “mask” and large, widely spaced ears with sharp tips.

Balinese or Balinese cat

The Balineese is a semi-long-haired relative of the Siamese . The Balinese cat, like the Siamese, is harmoniously built, has a color-point color and large, widely spaced ears. It differs from its relative in having longer hair, obedience and docileness, and an elongated head. Like the Siamese, the Balinese cat often suffers from strabismus, but breeders are trying to rid the breed of this eye defect.

Balinese cat

Another relative of the Siamese cat is the Havana Brown . The breed with a unique rich brown color, reminiscent of the color of Cuban cigars, appeared by crossing a “Siamese” with a shorthaired European cat.

Havana brown cat

Abyssinian cat

The graceful, smooth-haired "Abyssinian" comes from Ethiopia . The breed is ancient, distinguished by a harmonious physique of a lean oriental type. The cat is not large, weighs up to 4 kg. The muzzle is elongated, neat, the ears are large, of a standard triangular shape.

Peculiarities. A notable feature of appearance is the short, monochromatic coat with a ticking effect - tonal transitions, due to the division of each hair transversely into a light and dark tone.

The Abyssinian cat is playful, inquisitive, friendly, and has a developed hunting instinct . Gets along with dogs and willingly interacts with children.

Abyssinian cat

Somalia

The Somali longhair cat is a relative of the Abyssinian shorthair cat . Apart from coat length, there are no differences in appearance. The large ears of the Somali pet are often decorated with tassels, and the tail is bushy, like that of a fox.

Somali longhair cat

Orientals

An oriental cat with a large nose and ears is a peculiar breed that not everyone likes . Some consider a pet with an elongated lean body, thin bony paws and huge ears ugly and ridiculous, others say that it is cute and funny. The breed was created in the 1960s as a result of crossing Siamese and shorthair cats. The ears are so large that the lines from their tips to the chin form an equilateral triangle.

The Oriental is popular for its affectionate, sociable, non-aggressive nature , and its ability to get along with children and animals. The lop-eared pet is loving, needs the constant presence of the owner, and cannot stand loneliness.

Cornish Rex and Devon Rex

Both English breeds are distinguished by their grace and aristocratic disposition .

The Devon Rex, bred in the 1960s, is distinguished by a slender, toned physique , a fairly strong skeleton and developed muscle mass. Wide-open almond-shaped eyes and large triangular ears give the impression that the cat is alert and curious. The body is covered with curly, unusually delicate hair.

Devon Rex

The Cornish Rex is an elegant, fine-boned, long-eared cat, the breed is distinguished by its soft, wavy coat , which lacks guard hairs. The tail is thin, the limbs are dry, the bridge of the nose is straight, the large ears are slightly rounded at the tips.

Cornish Rex

Sphinxes

Many people believe that the sphinx is scary, unpleasant, and its naked body is slippery and sticky. In fact, there are several varieties of the breed according to the length of their coat : there are velor cats, and there are cats covered with fluff on the head and paws. But even a naked sphinx’s skin is pleasant to the touch and hot.

Reference. There are three breeds of Sphynx, created by fixing a random mutation: Canadian, Don and Peterbald.

The bare skin of the Sphynx must be carefully looked after, otherwise abundant sebaceous secretions will provoke dermatological diseases. The pet is sociable, loving, and has a hard time withstanding loneliness . Preventive examinations by a veterinarian are mandatory, since due to the mutational origin of the cat there is a high probability of developing hereditary pathologies.

Sphinx

Elf

When the Canadian Sphynx was crossed with the American Curl, the result was an elf - a hairless breed with large, backward-turned ears . The pet, which you would call a fairy-tale creature, is affectionate, playful, gets along with dogs, and willingly participates in children's games. The cat cannot stand loneliness and lack of attention, and is not suitable for a business person who rarely appears at home.

Elf

Ukrainian Levkoy

Another hairless breed with large curved ears appeared in Ukraine in 2004 . Ears with drooping tips are shaped like the petals of a gillyflower, and that is how the breed came to be called. The body is elongated, muscles are developed. Bare, wrinkled skin requires careful care.

Levkoy is good-natured, non-aggressive, non-offensive, and obedient . He loves his owner immensely and needs constant contact with a person.

Ukrainian Levkoy

Maine Coon

The native American breed appears stern and imposing . In fact, despite its enormous weight, reaching 12 kg, the cat is good-natured, affectionate, and playful. The Maine Coon's body is covered with smooth semi-long hair, its build is massive, its movements are graceful, the tips of its large ears are decorated with noticeable tassels. Despite its size, this balanced and calm pet is suitable for apartment living.

Maine Coon

Turkish Angora

In the 1970s, based on cats exported from Turkey, European and American breeders created a luxurious long-haired breed. The result was a snow-white, graceful cat with big ears . The breed is rare today, but extremely beautiful. The pet has large expressive eyes, a neat muzzle, and a lush feather-like tail.

The Turkish cat has an affectionate, playful character and a developed hunting instinct , making it an excellent mousetrap. The snow-white coat must be washed and combed regularly, otherwise the care is standard - a clean cat takes care of itself independently.

Kanaani or Canaani

In 2000, Israeli breeders created a breed of cats with large ears and an elongated muzzle. When creating the Canaan breed, they used a wild Libyan cat, as well as Bengal, Abyssinian and Oriental breeds. From their wild ancestor, the Canaani received a complex, independent, freedom-loving character. The coat color is leopard, the ears are large, set high, and mobile.

Kanaani (Canaani)

Serengeti

Cats resembling African servals are the result of crossing representatives of the Oriental and Bengal breeds . They have expressive green or golden-yellow eyes and large, upright ears with rounded tips. Serengeti are energetic, inquisitive, and sociable. The breed is rare, its price reaches 150 thousand rubles.

Serengeti

Poodlecat

Poodle kot - curly eared cats . The breed was created in Bavaria, and received its name because the cat's coat resembles that of a poodle dog. The breed is rare, its appearance is the result of complex selection. Scottish fold cats were involved in the crossing, so a purebred kitten can have straight or bent ears.

Poodle cat

Toyger

Short-haired cats with long ears and a muzzle resemble a small tiger , the breed was created by American breeders in 1993. The elongated, muscular body is decorated with dark stripes and spots; the weight of an adult cat reaches 8-10 kg. The toyger is friendly, balanced, affectionate, and suitable for apartment living.

Toyger

Elf

These cats owe their impressively sized ears, which are shaped like a curved shell, to their Curl ancestors, who were crossed with the Canadian Sphynx. This is a young, rare breed. Its representatives are characterized by a rounded, slightly protruding belly, lack of fur, and in most cases, even mustaches and eyebrows. Warm leather is very soft and feels like cashmere. They are very affectionate and require special care because they are very afraid of drafts.

It is very difficult to purchase such a pet: for this you need to make a special order, and the price of a kitten will be in the range of 1-1.5 thousand dollars, an adult animal - at least 2.5-3.5 thousand dollars.

Savannah

An American breed with a characteristic leopard print color and quite impressive size. The height of an adult animal can reach 50-70 cm, and weight – 15 kg. Representatives have a powerful body, strong limbs and a relatively small head on which wide, large ears are located. They are easy to train and love to swim and walk on a leash. But sometimes they develop a wild character, especially after reaching 3 years of age.

This is one of the most expensive breeds in the world: prices start from 4-7.5 thousand dollars, and for first-generation pets the cost can reach 20 thousand dollars. Moreover, males have a lower cost than females, since they are infertile until the 4th generation.

Somalia

The ancestor of the Somali cat, “wearing” large ears, is considered to be the Abyssinian. The breed is named after the neighboring country – Somalia. The breed received its calling in 1991. Distinctive features are: thick fluffy fur of a reddish color, white chest, large ears. With this characteristic, one can compare Somalia to a cunning fox. The breed standards are the same for Abyssinians and Somalis, only the length of the coat differs.

Somalia will be a devoted and affectionate friend, will not let you sit still, demanding frequent and lively games. The “big ears” cat loves various heights, so it can often walk along the closet, refrigerator, or back of the sofa. Does not require special care: brushing with a medium-hard or soft brush once a week, washing once a month, weekly ear cleaning. When feeding, use food that is high in protein but low in fat. This way the cat will have a fit, sporty look.

The undercoat is expressive, slightly lighter than the skin, the color takes a long time to develop. The cat has cute arrows in the corners of its eyes and rounded ears. Life expectancy is up to 16 years.

Oriental cat

This oriental cat has been paving the way to her celebrity for a long time. Thailand is considered the birthplace of the breed. For a long time, the country prohibited the travel of these cats abroad. But in the 19th century, Orientals came to London. At the exhibition, the breed failed twice - the jury did not want to recognize the “non-Siamese” color. In 1974, Orientals were registered as an official breed thanks to the efforts of Baroness Edith.

The structure of the body is characterized by smoothness, refined curves, and the body is graceful. Distinctive features are also:

  • head in the shape of a regular triangle;
  • long, but not turned up nose;
  • large rounded ears that grow up to three months;
  • almond-shaped eyes green or blue;
  • thin long tail.

It's amazing that Orientals have up to 300 types of colors. Moreover, all kittens in a litter can be of different colors. Cats are the owners of a ringing voice, which they are ready to demonstrate every minute. Protect your plants from kittens, as these curious lumps, already with large ears, are very playful and poke their noses everywhere. It should be remembered that for all their friendliness and activity, Orientals are touchy.

Cats' nails tend to grow quickly, so they need to be trimmed regularly. These fidgets love to eat, but do not overfeed them, otherwise you risk getting a voracious bun instead of an elegant cat. With proper care, Orientals live up to 20 years and become strongly attached to their first owner. This cat needs to be adopted for the rest of its life!

Devon Rex and Cornish Rex

Cats of these two breeds also have large ears. England became the birthplace of the Devonian. The breed quickly managed to conquer all of Europe, but with America it turned out to be more difficult. It took 20 years to gain popularity in the USA. Only after this did the proud Americans give in and accept such an eccentric breed, whose representatives wore large ears.

These mysterious animals have wide-set ears, sometimes with tassels, a slightly upturned capricious nose, and eyes of yellow, green and blue shades . A cute feature of the breed is its thick and curled mustache and eyebrows. The cats are stocky in structure, have a fairly powerful chest and long, thin legs. Devons' fur is short, but soft and slightly wavy, like a lamb's.

Devon combines a cat's appearance and a big, ardent love for his owner, like a dog's. Surprisingly, these cats, which have large ears, can be taught simple commands and are highly trainable from an early age, even as kittens. Such “elves” live up to 17 years.

Cornish has a wedge-shaped head, his cheekbones are clearly visible. The nose is straight and the ears are set high, wide at the base and pointed at the tips. The Cornish's tail is very long and flexible. The coat is soft, short and wavy, like an astrakhan fur coat.

This muzzle with large ears is distinguished by intelligence, becomes attached to the owner, and not to its habitat, and loves to eat, so watch your pet’s diet. It is practical that males do not mark territory. Cats that “wear” large ears are happy to walk on a leash, tolerate traveling in a bag well and can boast of a long life - up to 20 years.

Canadian Sphynx

This owner of smooth, hairless skin, with folds not only on his tummy, but throughout his body, instantly attracts attention. The first kitten of this breed was born in Canada in 1966 and had large ears. But stability in a bald appearance was achieved over the course of 10 years. The first Canadian Sphynxes were sent to Holland, where they laid the foundation for the beautiful breed.

There are only 3 breeds of hairless cats in the world: Canadian, Don and Pereburg Sphynxes. What makes a Canadian special?

Character traits:

  • Wedge-shaped head, prominent cheekbones, strong jaws.
  • A wide bridge of the nose, but at the same time a short nose, covered with light fur, like the lips.
  • Widely spaced ears, large, may have pubescence, but tassels are not allowed in the standard.
  • Kittens become sighted very early, they surprise with their large eyes, their color should be in harmony with their color.
  • The antennae are almost invisible and may be completely absent.
  • The gait is graceful and elegant, there are long toes on the paws, the hind legs are longer than the front ones.
  • The tail is long, looks like a whip, and may have a small tassel at the end, like a lion cub. The tail is most often curled up and pressed against the cat's body.
  • One of the fun facts is that the Canadian Sphynx seems very light, but when you pick it up in your hands, you will feel the considerable weight of the carcass, which has large ears. Cats are very loving, get along well with animals, very loyal creatures - always ready to entertain their owner. Such charming creatures live on average up to 15 years.

    Maine Coon

The birthplace of this cat is the northwestern town of the USA - Maine. There are absolutely funny legends about the origin of the breed: some suggest that the Maine originated from a raccoon and a cat, or a lynx and a cat. But these are just fancy tales.

The cat's long hair and large ears were formed due to the climate . These cats needed to adapt to cold, snowy winters, and besides, Maines were excellent hunters with soft gait and very sensitive hearing.

Already at birth, kittens differ from the cubs of other cats in their large size and thick, warm fur. The cat's head is not elongated in length as usual, but in width. The skull is quite massive, the cheekbones are set high, the ears are triangular in shape with lush tassels.

The oval eyes are set quite wide apart, the body is muscular and large. Maines should have tufts of fur between their toes; the coon's tail is large and fluffy. Such “heroes” weigh up to 16 kilograms.

Despite their large size, Maine Coons are very playful, constantly curious, friendly towards others, and love affection and tenderness. Cats of this breed take a long time to grow - the body can be fully formed over the course of 5 years.

Maines love to climb trees, especially as kittens. For what? They like to be on top, so the view becomes wider . As cats age, they become less active and lazily look around at those around them, but nothing can hide from their prying eyes. If the cat sees something interesting, the warm place will be immediately abandoned. Maine Coon ears need to be cleaned regularly.

Cats of this breed have pride and self-dignity - they will never beg for food or try to steal it from the table. Coons have an interesting manner of “speech” and live up to 20 years.

Balinese (Balinese cat)

Another breed with large ears, which is related to the Siamese cat, therefore has a similar appearance to it and at the same time is practically not similar in character. Kittens are born completely snow-white and only with age acquire a characteristic color. Balinese are very fond of affection and tenderness, they have a playful character, but they do not tolerate being offended: even if it is a child, scratches and aggression cannot be avoided.

Prices for Balinese kittens range from 5,000-15,000 thousand rubles.

Breeds of big-eared cats

Abyssinian cat

This breed, which has large ears, first appeared in Abyssinia. It has deep roots in Ethiopia, as cats have lived there for more than two thousand years. Archaeologists have found images of pharaohs with them on the walls. This breed of cat with large ears was considered sacred; only people of blue blood had them. Today's Abyssinians have the same royal posture, flexibility, grace and imperious gaze, sharp ears.

In America, cats with “big ears” appeared in 1907, and the breed was restored several times. The Abyssinian cat has miniature sizes (no more than 6 kg). Short-haired cats differ from each other in color, the price of a kitten depends on it, and thinness. The Abyssinian lives 15-20 years, loves :

  • self-respect;
  • active games;
  • forays into trees (the higher, the more interesting);
  • explore new places
  • watch the owner.

This cat, which has large ears, cannot stand loneliness; if you are often away from home, then you need to make a friend for the Abyssinian so as not to get bored in your absence. The cat has a subtle voice, gets along well with any animal, loves to “communicate”, is loyal and not capricious at all.

Ukrainian Levkoy

These cats are descendants of the Sphynx and have rather large ears, which are located on the top of the head and can be curled or point straight up. These graceful animals have a gentle disposition, do not remember evil and do not like loneliness. But pets require special care: the body must be wiped with warm water, and if irritation or peeling occurs, use creams and lotions.

The price of Levkoy kittens depends on their appearance (low-eared, straight-eared), gender and class and ranges from 5,000-20,000 rubles.

The most attractive cats with big ears: features of appearance and character

There is an unofficial top breeds with large ears, which are especially popular. Their representatives are completely different in appearance, character, and behavior. Among them, every fan of long-eared purrs can find their ideal pet, suitable in all respects.

Abyssinian cat

Abyssinians are compact in size, endowed with oriental grace and high intelligence. The breed is considered one of the oldest; the first mentions of it belong to the era of ancient Egypt.

The subjects of the pharaohs endowed the character traits of this cat with the goddess Bast, the patroness of fertility, women, and fun. The Abyssinian was brought to its modern appearance in Europe, where the animals were brought from Ethiopia by British soldiers.

They are neat, clean, distrustful, need personal space, and willful.

Siamese cat

The most popular breed, part of the oriental group. The body of the Siamese is long, the paws are thin, high, on a graceful mobile neck there is a wedge-shaped head with very large ears - sharp at the tips and wide at the base.

A distinctive feature of a cat with the correct exterior is an equilateral triangle formed by imaginary lines connecting the tops of the ears and the nose.

An interesting fact is that Siamese kittens are born snow-white, starting to darken at 4-5 days, reaching their final brightness by 6-11 months. Active, mobile, they need affection, stroking, and human company. They are trusting and easy to train, and remember insults for a long time.

Angora cat

The Turkish Angora is the result of the work of American and European breeders on animals brought from the Ankara Zoo in the mid-20th century. The ancestors of the breed were known in Europe already in the 16th century. Today they are elegant, medium-sized cats with a narrow, smoothly contoured muzzle, slightly slanted almond-shaped eyes and large ears set high and close to each other.

Angora wool resembles liquid silk; it is soft, light, flowing and does not require special care and is not prone to tangling.

Previously, there was one color option - snow-white; today, individuals of coal black, cream, blue, tabby, and merle colors are becoming more common. Angoras do not like loneliness, they are playful, affectionate, and often make guttural sounds with their mouths closed instead of the standard purring.

Oriental cat

The closest relatives of Siamese cats have many similarities with them: light bones, developed muscles, a refined body, a wedge-shaped head, large, wide-set ears with rounded tips.

The breed originated in America in 1957, and gained recognition there years later. Available in short-haired and long-haired versions. The colors of Oriental cats are amazingly diverse.

Smart, resourceful animals easily learn to open refrigerator doors and get into locked rooms. They need to be given regular food for the mind, trained so that the cats do not get bored and do not invent entertainment for themselves (the concept of good leisure time for an animal does not always coincide with the owner’s ideas).

Maine Coon

Very large animals, the cat’s weight is 6-8 kg, height is up to 40 cm at the withers, length from nose to tail tip is up to 140 cm. The breed originated from aboriginal cats of North America (Maine).

They are also called Manx coon cats. Farmers were the first to appreciate the physical strength and excellent hunting abilities of these giants with a large body, powerful bones, massive head and large ears, decorated with coquettishly predatory tassels.

One of the few cat breeds that adore water. The Maine Coon enjoys bathing and splashing in the basins located for him on the property. It feels comfortable in the apartment and on the street; its long fur with a thick undercoat reliably protects the animal from the cold. A luxurious fur coat does not require special care; regular brushing is enough.

Ukrainian Levkoy

Levkoy is unique in two ways. Firstly, this is the only breed bred in Ukraine, and secondly, it combines two rare genes - hairlessness and lop-earedness. It is difficult to fully classify Levkoys as cats with large ears, but the bases of the shells are really wide and powerful. And the straight variety is gifted with decent “burdocks”.

Their skin is folded, elastic, hot. Ideal specimens are completely hairless, but the standard allows velor individuals for breeding and exhibitions. Absolutely devoid of aggression towards people and other animals, cats are extremely sociable and inquisitive. Their habits and behavior are similar to dogs, very kind and affectionate.

Sphinxes: Canadian, Donskoy and Peterbald

The oldest type of sphinx is the Canadian one, it has existed for more than half a century. The Don brothers and the Peterbalds are in their infancy. They are about 15 years old. Why the ancestors of hairless cats lost their fur remains unclear. A single mutation was supported by crossing “nadders” with short-haired breeds. The size of the ears of all varieties ranges from large to very large.

Sphinxes are agile, jumping creatures that can easily overcome barriers 1-1.5 meters high. They love attention to themselves, prefer to sleep in the same bed with their owner, are afraid of drafts, and catch colds easily. They sunbathe in the sun. Forced long-term loneliness provokes stress in pets.
