Dry food for kittens Grandin
Greetings to everyone!
For a long time we have been struggling with peeling that occurs on soft areas of the skin, which is a consequence of trying different types, brands and classes of dry food for kittens. The manufacturer contains a huge amount of nutrients, vitamins, raw materials, etc. in the premium food, which, in turn, prevents diseases of the digestive tract, skin, and teeth of our four-legged charges.
However, not all kittens are suitable for the diet, although they are expensive and, as the manufacturer states on the packaging and in advertising, food elements. Various individuals of any breed can experience allergic reactions to certain supplements, and sometimes even vitamins!
Having tried several lines of dry food manufacturers, we, after consulting with my ward, settled on the manufacturer of dry food for kittens “GRANDIN” Holistic grain free
As the owner of a 7-month-old Bengal kitten, being a victim of marketing, I was attracted by the beautiful, high-quality and, I dare say, stylish packaging. The cat, in turn, was attracted by the aroma of an unopened and fairly sealed package.
The smell of the food seemed specific to me, compared to the previous three lines that I had previously purchased.
The granules are medium in size, dark in color, unlike the granules familiar to owners of the most sold brands of food. The consistency is firmer than the above (list your options).
Feed consumption is less than usual. The food contains no grains (the cheapest raw material for making dry food) and a high percentage of pure! Natural chicken meat (20%). Due to the complete exclusion of cereal components from the diet, the cat’s allergy completely disappeared. Digestion has improved. The coat is smooth and silky! The unpleasant smell from the mouth has disappeared. The kitten is energetic and playful (which is not fun at night;D)
The review is being written by a Bengal kitten named Simba, who is looking forward to the evening portion of “GRANDIN” Holistic grain free. Therefore, I am stopping my review, making it public and waiting for your comments and any questions of interest.
And for the most curious readers, I will tell you how you can consistently get a discount on this product, worth 399 rubles, as well as on any other products of the “=)” store chain
Health to you and your pets!

Feed composition
We will analyze the composition of Grandin feed using the example of a grain-free dry diet for sterilized cats and neutered males aged 1-7 years. Since conclusions about the quality of a product are usually made primarily based on the first five components, it is these that you should pay attention to first of all:
- Meat ingredients (30.5% dried chicken, 27.5% fresh chicken, 6% dried turkey, 4% pork liver).
- Potato.
- Green peas.
- Beet pulp.
- Chicken fat.
Next on the list are: alfalfa 2.5%, apples, chicken eggs, brewer's yeast, inactivated yeast, flaxseed, black currant 1%, plant complex, cold-pressed oil from Norwegian salmon and a number of other useful additives.
Squirrels
In first place is a multi-component source of animal protein, represented by two types of meat: mainly chicken with the addition of a small amount of turkey. Despite the fact that the presence of dried and fresh meat is indicated in almost identical quantities ((27.5 and 30.5%, respectively), it should be borne in mind that during the production of dry granules, the volume of fresh meat will decrease by approximately 4 times. In general, these are useful for most cats, except for those with a chicken protein allergy, pork liver is a by-product rather than a meat, so its presence on the list of meat ingredients seems a bit odd, and it is more of a flavoring agent than a source of protein.
Chicken eggs are another high-quality source of protein, but the manufacturer does not indicate in what form they were used: dried, frozen or raw (the latter is the most preferred).
Fats
Grandin's source of fat is chicken fat, a chicken byproduct that is a good source of omega-6 fatty acids. This component is often present in high-quality diets and has a more attractive taste and aroma for cats compared to other types of animal fat.
An additional source of healthy fats is cold-pressed Norwegian salmon oil. Due to cold-press technology, it better preserves useful substances, so the value of this component will be quite high. Another source of omega-3 fatty acids is flaxseed, but some experts argue that the cat’s body is not able to fully absorb such acids from flax seeds.
Carbohydrates
Potatoes are a source of carbohydrate that is healthier for cats than grains, provided they are added in small quantities. The percentage of potatoes is not indicated, but its presence in the top five components rather indicates a considerable quantity. In addition, the composition contains green peas - a good source of fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, iron and other microelements. Although the manufacturer does not indicate in what form it is used.
Other Supplements
Additionally, Grandin feed uses:
- Beet pulp is a prebiotic and a source of fiber necessary to support digestive processes and the formation of normal stool.
- Alfalfa is an additional source of protein and fiber.
- Apples – contain pectin, which improves the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and normalizes stool consistency.
- Yeast (brewer's and inactivated) - contains minerals and vitamins that have a beneficial effect on digestion processes, the functioning of the nervous system, and the condition of hair and skin.
- Herbal complex - contains herbs that have properties beneficial to the digestive system (dandelion, linden, nettle), but a minimal amount of them is unlikely to have a real effect.
- Chicory root - provides the body with fiber and inulin necessary to maintain healthy intestinal microflora.
- Yucca Schidigera - contains bacteria that promote normal intestinal function and reduce the odor of excrement.
Grandin also contains a number of other additives (blackcurrant, freshwater algae, etc.) with beneficial properties, the amount of which is too small to have a noticeable effect on the cat’s body.
The advantages of the food include the use of meat components as the main source of protein and their large quantity, balanced vitamin and mineral composition. But combining components is a kind of marketing ploy by the manufacturer in order to bring higher quality components to the forefront of the composition, regardless of their actual volume. The name “grain-free” is confirmed by the complete absence of cereal components in the composition. Among the disadvantages: the lack of exact names of the preservatives used. In addition, holistic foods must indicate the proportion of at least the main components, which cannot be said about Grandin. Thus, Grandin falls short of being holistic. After analyzing the composition, the product can be classified rather as a super-premium class.
Grandin cat food review
Dry cat food Grandin (“Grandin”) is produced in the Czech Republic to order from the Russian (chain of pet stores “Four Paws”).
The official website is , it contains information about the composition of the entire line of feeds and recommended feeding rates. The composition of the food is closest to the super premium class. The Grandin brand also produces dry and canned (wet) dog food.
Composition of Grandin feed
Let's look at the composition of Grandin food using the example of the Kitten option (for kittens and nursing cats, with chicken). You can see it in the photo below (click on the image to enlarge it for easier reading):
Photo of the composition indicated on the food packaging.
In first place - “meat and fish ingredients”, with this name the manufacturer combined 24% dried chicken *, 20% fresh chicken, 19% fresh pork liver, 8% dried duck, 5.6% dried cod, eel and sardine, 1.7% dried pork and beef.
* The English description of the composition states “dried chicken”, that is, “dried chicken”, and not dried chicken meat. The rest of the meat and fish ingredients also don't have the word "meat" in English, and probably include other animal parts.
Despite the absence of the word “meat,” the food does not contain ingredients rich in plant protein, which means that almost all of the 38% protein indicated in the analysis is of animal origin (better absorbed than plant protein).
Potatoes and green peas are sources of carbohydrates in the feed. Sources of fats and fatty acids are chicken fat, Norwegian salmon oil. Sources of fiber include beet pulp, apples, flaxseed and plant complex.
Note that flaxseed is also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, and the herbs listed in the herbal complex contain various beneficial substances, albeit in very small quantities.
Chicken eggs serve as a source of protein and other nutrients. Yeast contains many B vitamins. Minerals - dietary supplement of minerals. Chicory root contains the prebiotic inulin, which is beneficial for digestion.
Chinese wolfberry berries, according to the manufacturer, improve immunity. Ginger root is a natural seasoning that also contains various beneficial substances. Yucca Schidigera - reduces the odor of feces.
Advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of the food include:
- the main source of protein is meat and fish ingredients;
- no corn, wheat or other grains are used;
- Contains a good vitamin and mineral supplement.
Flaws:
- can only be purchased at the Four Paws pet store chain;
- the preservatives used are not specified (it is simply stated “Technological additives: antioxidants, preservatives”);
- quite high price (comparable to many analogues).
