Can Covinan be used for dogs?

Main features

Covinan is a sterile white suspension used for injection. For packaging, the manufacturer uses 20 ml glass bottles. To maintain the sterility of the liquid, rubber stoppers are used to seal the bottles, which are rolled up with aluminum caps.

The composition is based on prolygestone, a synthetic steroid hormone. 1 ml of liquid contains 100 mg of this substance, which affects the hormonal and reproductive systems. The composition also includes various auxiliary components.

Covinan should be stored in a dry place protected from the sun, but no special conditions are required. The main thing is that the air temperature is between 4 and 25˚C, and children do not have access to the drug. The medicine can be stored in a closed package for 3 years. You can see the production date on the packaging.

Note! The suspension should not be stored in an open bottle.

Composition and release form

The medication is prepared in the form of an injection solution. The transparent liquid has a light white tint. The medicine is packaged in sterile glass bottles, the volume of which is 20 ml. To ensure tightness, they are sealed with rubber stoppers and rolled up with aluminum foil.

The main active ingredient is prolygestone. 1 ml of the drug contains 100 mg. In addition to the steroid hormone, the composition also includes auxiliary substances:

  • lecithin;
  • macrogol;
  • methyl parahydroxybenzoate;
  • polysorbate;
  • sodium citrate;
  • proyl parahydroxybenzoate, etc.

There are no special requirements for storing the drug. The main thing is that the air temperature is from 2 to 25˚C. The storage location should be away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and also out of reach of pets and children. After opening the bottle, the solution is suitable for use for 28 days.

The cost of Covinan for dogs is quite high. A 20 ml bottle costs 2100-2500 rubles, depending on the region and pharmacy. You can find the drug at a good price on the Internet. Make purchases only from trusted resources so as not to fall for a fake.

Operating principle

When a synthetic hormone enters an animal’s body, it has the following effect:

  • prevents the maturation of follicles in the ovaries;
  • inhibits the release of hormones that regulate the functioning of the reproductive system;
  • suppresses the secretion of the mammary glands;
  • prevents the occurrence of heat.

In addition, the main component increases the viscosity of mucus in the uterus, which becomes an obstacle to the attachment of a fertilized egg. If the medicine is administered during the rest period between periods of sexual activity, the drug prevents the occurrence of estrus.

The peculiarity of the drug is that the synthetic hormone can be “stored” in the body. It accumulates in adipose tissue and liver, due to which a long-term contraceptive effect is achieved. When discontinued, its effect gradually decreases. On average, within 6 months the cat’s sexual cycle is restored. Sometimes this process takes up to 12 months, and sometimes it goes faster - within 2-3 months. The synthetic hormone penetrates the intestines along with bile, so it is mostly excreted from the body with feces, and only partially with urine.

Composition and pharmaceutical properties

The main active component of Covinan is prolygestone, a steroid hormone that is a synthetic analogue of progesterone. This compound has been proven to:

  • slows down the production of gonadotropic hormones (including luteinizing hormone);
  • inhibits the process of maturation of follicles in the cat’s ovaries, promotes their regression;
  • prevents the release of estradiol;
  • prevents the occurrence of estrus;
  • increases the viscosity of mucus on the inner lining of the uterus, interfering with the implantation of a fertilized egg;
  • inhibits the production of secretions by the animal's mammary glands.

When administered during anestrus (the complete absence of sexual activity in a cat), prolygestone prevents the increase in the concentration of luteinizing hormone in the body, minimizing the likelihood of conception. In addition, the active component of the drug has weak corticosteroid and estrogenic activity.

The prolonged effect of Covinan is due to the ability of prolygestone to accumulate in fatty tissue and circulate in liver tissue. Together with bile, the active component of the drug enters the intestines and is then excreted from the body with feces. A small portion of this compound is excreted in the cat's urine.

Along with prolygestone, Covinan includes a whole range of auxiliary components. Among them are polysorbate 40, macrogol 4000, propyl and methyl parahydroxybenzoate, water for injection, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium citrate, lecithin and sorbitan palmitate.

Indications and features of use

According to the instructions for use, Covinan is used for cats as a contraceptive, that is, to prevent unwanted pregnancy. The use of the drug makes it possible to regulate sexual heat in females.

The medication is administered exclusively subcutaneously in the following doses:

  • for cats weighing less than 7 kg – 1 ml;
  • for animals weighing more than 7 kg – 1.5 ml.

For individual regulation of sexual heat, the injection is given once, always during the period of “rest” (between estrus). To ensure a stable period of sexual tranquility for a long time, the following treatment regimen is used:

  1. The first injection of a hormonal agent is given during a period of complete rest.
  2. The second injection is repeated 3 months after the first procedure.
  3. The third injection is given after 4 months.
  4. The fourth and subsequent injections are given at intervals of 5 months.

You should not skip the next injection if used systematically, as this will negatively affect the effectiveness of the medication. If the injection is not given on time, this should be corrected as soon as possible. Subsequently, injections are given according to the previously prescribed scheme.

How to give injections correctly?

Covinan injections should be given following a number of rules:

  1. The suspension should not be allowed to be introduced into scar tissue, as well as fat deposits located under the epidermis.
  2. Intradermal injections are not allowed.
  3. Before administration, the liquid should be shaken well so that it becomes homogeneous.
  4. The injection site must be treated with medical alcohol.

Note! If you do not have enough skills to perform the injection yourself, it is better to entrust the procedure to a doctor.

Features of use in cats

Covinan must be administered subcutaneously. Do not allow intradermal administration, as well as contact of the drug with the subcutaneous fat layer or scar tissue. It is recommended to treat the injection site with alcohol or an alcohol-containing solution before injection. The suspension should be shaken thoroughly before use. To successfully use and achieve the desired effect, you need to correctly calculate the dosage and draw up a treatment regimen.

Scheme for using Covinan

If you want to prevent sexual estrus one-time, then you need to make 1 injection during the rest period (within 3-4 months after the last estrus). But when it comes to constant use, you need to follow the schedule:

  • first injection during the rest period;
  • second injection 3 months after the first injection;
  • third injection 4 months after the second injection;
  • then the drug is administered every 5 months.

One day my mother was getting ready to go on a long train, and she had no one to leave her cat (Dusya) with. It so happened that at that moment I had someone else’s cat in my foster care, and we did not plan to breed Dusya. When she was brought in, I noticed signs of a precursor (there was discharge, but she did not let the cat near her). I had no choice but to take the animal to the veterinarian. Dusya was given an injection of Covinan, and the cat no longer pestered her. True, for the first couple of days I had to look after the animals, but for the remaining 2 weeks the cat calmly coexisted with the cat.

Precautionary measures

There are several rules that should not be forgotten when working with the drug:

  • Before and after contact, hands should be washed with warm water and soap;
  • in case of accidental contact of the drug with the skin or mucous membranes of the eye, they must be washed;
  • people with hypersensitivity to components should avoid direct contact with Covinan;
  • in case of allergies or if the drug accidentally enters the human body, you should immediately contact a medical facility;
  • Empty medicine bottles must not be used for household purposes; they must be disposed of with household waste.

To avoid direct contact with the medicine, you can use rubber gloves and other personal protective equipment.

When is use prohibited?

The instructions indicate that Covinan for cats has many contraindications. You should refuse to use it in the following cases:

  • during pregnancy;
  • during sexual activity;
  • during the lactation period (milk production stops);
  • for pathologies of the genitourinary system;
  • with vaginal discharge that is observed over a long period;
  • before the first heat.

If your animal has diabetes, you should monitor its sugar levels when using Covinan.

Note! It is strictly forbidden to use Covinan in combination with other hormonal medications. There is no information in the instructions about the interaction of the medication with other drugs.

Description of the drug Covinan

Covinan is a hormonal drug for cats and dogs, used to regulate sexual heat and during false pregnancy in females. The drug was developed by the Dutch pharmacological company (Intervet International BV).

Covinan is available in the form of an injection suspension. It is bottled in dark glass bottles. Each bottle (20 ml) is closed with a rubber stopper and covered with a metal cap. All units of the drug are individually packaged in cardboard boxes along with an annotation. A package with 1 bottle can cost from 1700 to 1900 rubles.

Externally, Covinan is a cloudy white liquid, which can separate during storage. This can be easily eliminated with vigorous shaking.

Composition of the drug

The hormonal drug contains the following substances:

  • prolygestone (active ingredient);
  • food additives E-214 and E-218;
  • polysorbate (surfactant);
  • lecithin and sorbitan palmitate (emulsifiers);
  • sodium citrate, water (food additive E-331);
  • potassium dihydrogen phosphate (salt used to make an isotonic solution);
  • macrogol 4000 (a substance that causes a laxative effect);
  • water for injections.

The instructions for use say that Covinan should be stored under the following conditions:

  • in sealed manufacturer's packaging;
  • separately from food and feed;
  • in places inaccessible to children;
  • in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight;
  • at temperatures from 2°C to 25°C;
  • within 3 years from the date of production.

Important: the suspension must be used immediately after opening the bottle. Unused medicine should be discarded immediately. Also, you should not use expired or spoiled medicine (for example, a darkened suspension).

Covinan bottle 20 ml. Contraceptive for dogs and cats, prevention of estrus and hunting, prevention of false pregnancy. 1 ml contains 100 mg of proligestone as an active ingredient and auxiliary components: methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, sorbitan palmitate, polysorbate 40, lecithin, sodium citrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, macrogol 4000 and water for injection.

Side effects

Since the medicine affects not only the reproductive system, but also the hormonal levels of the animal, it can cause serious side effects. For this reason, it is not recommended to use the medicine without consulting your doctor.

The injection sites may be painful. Sometimes in these places the fur becomes lighter or falls out completely. Covinan can also cause other side effects:

  • increased appetite;
  • weight gain;
  • thickening of the endometrium;
  • pyometritis;
  • enlargement of the mammary glands;
  • apathy.

The drug can have a strong effect on the behavior of the animal. Quite often, owners are faced with an increased appetite in their cat. In this case, you should not follow the animal’s lead. The diet, portion size and frequency of feedings should remain the same. In addition, the animal may become more aggressive, disobedient or, conversely, too apathetic and fall into a depressed state. You should consult with your doctor about the advisability of further use of the medicine or the possibility of selecting another method of contraception.

Kovinan for cats instructions

Instructions for use of Covinan apply to both cats and dogs . The drug should be administered strictly under the animal’s skin in the middle part of its skin fold. Injections inside the skin and into subcutaneous fatty deposits and scar tissue should not be allowed.

Shortly before administration, the bottle with the drug must be shaken well, and the injection site must be disinfected using a 70% alcohol solution.

For the purpose of treatment and prevention of pseudolactation and false pregnancy in dogs, Covinan should be administered once, the dosage is 1-3 ml depending on the weight and breed of the animal:

If the weight is less than 20 kg, the dosage will be 1 ml:

  • from 21 to 40 kg – 2 ml,
  • from 40 kg and more – 3 ml.

And in order to suppress sexual desire in cats, the dosage is 1 ml per weight of 7 kilograms and above. If necessary, the dosage is increased to one and a half milliliters.

Application schemes

In order to develop persistent anestrus, Covinan is administered to cats and dogs according to the indicated doses according to the following scheme:

  • first injection – during anestrus (for both cats and dogs) or during proestrus (for dogs),
  • the second – 3 months after the first,
  • the third is provided four months after the second procedure,
  • then administration is carried out every five months.

In cases where dogs that are given Covinan according to the instructions continue to show signs of pre-estrus (proestrus), then in order to prevent undesirable consequences, the animal is given an injection in the required dose out of turn.

After this, the regimen for using the drug will depend on what the interval between injections was before undesirable manifestations of proestrus appeared:

if the interval between injections was five months, then after an extraordinary injection Covinan is administered to the animal after four months, and then every five months,

if the interval was four months, then after an extraordinary use the drug should be administered according to the basic scheme, which was described just above.

To prevent sexual desire in cats or dogs, Covinan should be administered once. If we are talking about dogs, then during anestrus, no later than a month before estrus, and if we are talking about cats, then during di- or anestrus.

In order to suppress estrus in dogs, Covinan is administered immediately after signs of proestrus appear in the form of an enlarged loop or bleeding. These signs will slowly disappear over the course of a week.

On average, the sexual cycle in dogs is restored after six months; occasionally, estrus can be restored in a period of 3 months to a year.

Side effects and contraindications

As already indicated, the use of this drug in animals is safe. But according to the instructions, in rare cases, side effects such as:

  • pyometritis,
  • slight increase in animal body weight,
  • hyperplasia,
  • increased appetite,
  • endometrium,
  • slight hypertrophy of the mammary glands,
  • apathy.

The likelihood of these effects occurring may be higher if the animal was given other drugs that are analogues of progesterone along with Covinan. And immediately after its administration, a local painful reaction may be observed to a minor extent. Also, the fur at the injection site may become lighter, and the hair may thin out slightly. Sometimes the drug can cause adrenal suppression, like other progestogens.

The instructions also contain a number of contraindications to the use of this product:

  • animal pregnancy and lactation,
  • estrus period,
  • should not be given to animals suffering from diseases of the genitourinary system,
  • if the animal has prolonged vaginal discharge,
  • cannot be used if the dog was treated with progestogens and estrogens for false pregnancy,
  • late stages of proestrus and before the first estrus,
  • for diabetes.

Personal precautions

When you give Covinan to an animal, you should follow the general rules of personal hygiene, as well as safety precautions, which are prescribed in the instructions. When the procedure is completed, be sure to wash your hands with warm soapy water and place the medicine out of the reach of children.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the drug is the restoration of hormonal levels after cessation of use. The advantages include the high effectiveness of the medication, which is confirmed by numerous reviews from veterinarians and owners.

The medicine has significantly more disadvantages:

  • Inconvenient packaging for cat owners. Only 20th part of the bottle is used, the rest has to be thrown away.
  • A number of contraindications. It is not always possible to use medicine. Before starting use, you should visit a doctor and undergo a comprehensive examination.
  • Serious side effects. The reproductive system may be affected, and the animal’s behavior may also change.
  • Difficulty of injections. When administering the drug, special care should be taken. Inexperienced people may give the injection incorrectly.
  • High price. The price of one bottle of Covinan is around 2000 rubles.

Covinan is an effective contraceptive, but should only be used when absolutely necessary. If you do not plan to breed kittens, veterinarians recommend sterilizing the cat.

COVINAN, 20 ml.

COMPOSITION AND RELEASE FORM The drug is a sterile aqueous suspension of white color, containing 100 mg of prolygestone as an active ingredient per 1 ml and auxiliary components: methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, sorbitan palmitate, polysorbate 40, lecithin, sodium citrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, macrogol 4000 and water for injection. Produced in glass bottles of 20 ml, packed in a cardboard box. PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES Covinan is a hormonal drug based on a synthetic analogue of progesterone. The natural hormone progesterone is produced in both sexes in the adrenal cortex, in females by the luteal cells of the corpus luteum. Its function is to prepare the endometrium for implantation of the zygote, to ensure the normal course of pregnancy, and to stimulate the development of mammary gland tissue. Its synthetic analogue (prolygestone) has the property of inhibiting the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which are produced by the anterior pituitary gland. The drug Covinan inhibits the synthesis of estradiol by ovarian follicles, which prevents the development of morphological and psychophysiological changes in females associated with the sexual cycle (prevents the development of estrus). Prolygestone changes the physical and chemical properties of mucus in the uterus, inhibits the proliferation of the endometrium and mammary gland cells. When the drug is administered during the period of sexual rest (anestrus), prolygestone maintains the concentration of LH at a low level, as a result of which the process of ovulation becomes impossible. Prolygestone is deposited in fatty tissue and recycled in the animal’s liver, which is responsible for the long-lasting effect of the drug. Its maximum concentration in blood plasma when administered subcutaneously is reached after 2 - 3.5 days and is 29 ng/ml. The drug has weak estrogenic, insignificant corticosteroid activity and practically no androgenic effect. Therefore, all possible risks from using hormonal contraceptives are minimized. The drug is excreted primarily in bile. In terms of the degree of impact on the body of warm-blooded animals, the drug is classified as a low-hazard substance and in recommended doses does not have a resorptive-toxic, mutagenic or sensitizing effect. INDICATIONS Prescribed to bitches and cats to prevent and suppress the development of estrus, prevent and terminate false pregnancy and pseudo-lactation. SIDE EFFECTS In extremely rare cases, the development of pyometritis, hyperplasia of the endometrium and breast tissue, increased appetite and weight gain, and general lethargy are possible. There may be slight discoloration at the injection site, hair loss, and tenderness when palpating the injection site. The likelihood of side effects increases significantly in cases where animals have been treated with other progesterone analogues. CONTRAINDICATIONS The use of the drug is contraindicated in bitches and cats who have suffered from diseases of the genitourinary system, as well as in cases of prolonged vaginal discharge of unknown etiology, in bitches who received estrogens or progestogens for the treatment of false pregnancy. Covinan is not used in pregnant and lactating females and during estrus. It is undesirable to use the drug in bitches before the first estrus and in the later stages of proestrus. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS For animals suffering from diabetes and metabolic diseases, the drug should be used with caution. In such cases, monitoring the level of glucose and other elements in the blood and urine is mandatory. After completing all manipulations with the drug, you should thoroughly wash your hands with warm water and soap. STORAGE CONDITIONS : In a dry place, protected from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and animals, separately from food and feed at a temperature of 2 to 25 °C. Vials of the drug must be disposed of 28 days after opening. Shelf life: 3 years.

Owner reviews

Marina, owner of a non-pedigreed cat:

“We gave two injections of Covinan to our cat. Acted effectively. There were no heats, but then they decided to have surgery. After surgery, it was discovered that the walls of the uterus became thicker, that is, endometritis began to develop - one of the side effects of the drug. I would not recommend using this medicine unless absolutely necessary if your pet’s health is important.”

Valentina, owner of a Persian cat:

“For medical reasons, we used Covinan for our Jetta. I did not notice any significant changes in behavior during this period. The cat was bred from the second heat after the course. The kittens were born healthy and fully developed. Then they knitted it 5 more times. When they decided to sterilize (the uterus and ovaries were removed), no problems with the reproductive system were found. It’s a good contraceptive, although it’s expensive.”

detailed instructions

It is used exclusively subcutaneously, carefully inserted into the skin fold (withers), bypassing intradermal injections, as well as injections into vulnerable fat deposits and scars after surgical interventions. It must first be shaken well before administration. The injection site is massaged a little and also treated with a 70% alcohol solution. For preventive purposes, it is administered in a single dose depending on the initial weight of the pet:

  • up to 20 kg - 1 ml.
  • 20 - 40 kg - 2 ml.
  • from 40 kg - 3 ml.

To suppress activity, only the following dosage is needed:

  • up to 5 kg - 1 - 1.5 ml.
  • up to 10 kg - 1.5 - 2.5 ml.
  • up to 20 kg - 2.5 - 3.5 ml.
  • 20 - 30 kg - 3 - 4.5 ml.
  • 30 - 45 kg - 4.5 - 5.5 ml.
  • from 45 kg - 5 - 6 ml.

In order to prevent a cycle once, it is administered a month before the estrus. After this, the cycle is restored again after six months, and in some individual situations after a year.

If an individual has a pre-estrus condition, then to prevent unwanted estrus, an unscheduled infusion should be given at the suggested dose.

What the owners say about Kowinan

If you believe the reviews about this drug, dog owners note that with regular use every six months the animal will always be calm. But it is also recommended to make sure that your pet is healthy before you give it Covinan for the first time. The effectiveness of use is noted only when the animal does not have any serious diseases.

So, we examined the features of the homeopathic drug Covinan, which is used in veterinary practice to suppress sexual desire in female cats and dogs. Now you will know in what cases the animal will need it.

General information

"Covinan" refers to hormonal drugs and is used to block the so-called. “sexual hunting” in females, as well as ensuring a long period of contraception. In addition, it is used to treat pseudolactation syndrome (false pregnancy) in them.

Did you know? Cats are capable of producing about a hundred different sounds, and dogs - no more than a dozen.

This product for cats and dogs is produced by the Dutch company Intervet International BV. Externally, “Covinan” is a white suspension, packaged in 20 ml bottles. These containers, in turn, are placed in a cardboard box, which also contains instructions for its use.

Side effects and contraindications

The risk of side effects when using Covinan is extremely low. In such cases, pyometritis, endometrial hyperplasia, a slight increase in the animal’s weight, increased appetite, lethargy, and a slight enlargement of the mammary glands may be observed. There are a number of contraindications to the use of this product, namely:

  • it cannot be used when the female is pregnant or nursing an offspring;
  • it is forbidden to use during estrus;
  • It is prohibited to use if the pet suffers from any disease of the genitourinary system;
  • cannot be used if prolonged vaginal discharge is observed in the female;
  • use is excluded for pets that were previously treated with estrogens and progestogens (usually these drugs are used for false pregnancy);
  • cannot be used before the bitch's first heat, or during the last stage of proestrus.

Important! If the animal suffers from diabetes, then the use of the drug is possible, but the level of glucose in the blood and urine of such a pet must be carefully monitored. This is usually provided at a veterinary clinic.
